Number 1 thing the defense for team 118 needs to work on

I'll stick with good edge containment and stopping WR screens. Both hurt us badly this year. On the side I hope an in coming recruit can beat out Coleman .....they seemed to leave sutton alone but got good yardage picking on Coleman and his side of the LOS.

Our secondary contain and alley support was bad all season. Hopefully another year in the weight room or new starters in the secondary one fixes that.

Team 118 should be noticeably faster than Team 117. I'm hoping that, with a little experience under their belt, Team 119 can bring home our first SEC championship since Team 102. The seniors on Team 121 really have a chance to put this program back on top.

PASS RUSH, PASS RUSH, PASS RUSH, AND MORE PASS RUSH. A strong pass rush will start to make the DB's and LB's look like all stars in coverage. If we have the ability to take away or limit one part of an offense, our D becomes that much stronger.

I think things will look better when we don't have Probst and 3 walkons in against the run and pass against sec teams. And maybe a de that gets his first sack before the last game.
We need speed and instinct.

I literally LOL'd when they announced it was his first sack of the season. Must do better than that.

Shedding blocks! Our defensive backs and LB's act like the blocker has some sort of super glue on them and seem to always have trouble being able to disengage from the blocker in time to make the tackle. Team repeatedly made 7,8,9 yards on those WR screens due to this.

Unrelated but McCullers ought to be ashamed by the way he played last night. Most of the time he was in he was just standing up and then making sure no one dived at his knees. He's the only DL I saw not playing with any degree of effort.

Its Depth . We may not be the fastest team in the NCAA ...but the speed issue is not as bad as most think . When you watch a team like Bama on D ..they sub platoons for their 1st domn , 2nd down , and 3rd down . We dont.

No real depth along the front or the LBs. Thats is why the D starts wilting after a quarter ...coupled with the fact that our O does not maintain drives ...the D is absorbing far to many reps

This too.

Line of scrimmage

It all starts here. It's what makes the SEC the best conference in college football as far as defense goes. I don't care how fast we are in the back end, if we can't control the line of scrimmage, we do not improve on defense.

Direct coaching decisions cost us a chance to win two games, the fake FG vs Vandy and starting Peterman vs FL and leaving him in to long. Defensive schemes and adjustments had no real bearing IMHO. Maybe the staff missed something or did something and UT was so inept nobody noticed. I am sure the staff never instructed the defense to miss tackle and to get out quicked and to allow the offense to get behind them.

Better tackling and technique seems to be what the staff needs to coach.

Instinct is way underrated….great addition to the post. Coleman and McNeil have all the measurables, and neither seem to have football smarts often referred to as instincts.

Sutton has great instincts, imo. Randolph has good instincts and comes to meet the rb like a man, so you guys probably won't hear me bash him while he's here.
Coleman and McNeil appear to have no idea where the ball is going, when it's coming, or be able to predict a move of a ballcarrier and meet him hard in open space.
I hopefully assume that more of our players have instinct, but it was held back by bad coaching last year and learning a new system this year. We are already slow and learning a new system of reads, etc, made it worse.
I know posters and fans are on about moving towards different DC and OC, but I didn't really see where Jancek/Martinez screwed up this year. Db's had most int's in a long time. Zone blitz dropping DE killed us everytime, and leaving AJ in man, but I thought they did ok. No offense made it tougher on them, and having 2 sr DE's that get their first sacks of the year in the last game flat out sucks.

Can you explain the fake FG costing us the Vandy game? I see people posting this and I don't understand. :hi:

Communication in the secondary was also an issue, especially when Randolph wasn't out there.

Edge containment and containing mobile QBs

It was obvious that we couldn't set an edge with any consistency. Either by scheme or ability or understanding. No matter what it was bad! Our d ends never kept their outside hands free an got hooked all year. For the 4 man front to be good we have to get consistent play from our tackles and our ends have to stay outside and squeeze the inside run plays. Our lbs need good line play to keep the blocks off of them. They have to occupy the interior line men so our line backers can run to the ball. Until we do that were going to struggle. McCullers was a bust for the most part. He very rarely drew a double team. Couch could have been the difference.... Sold out for 1500 or so. Lets hope AJ returns and we find that rotation that demands a play side double team. Considering how bad we were up front AJ played great! Change is coming!

I am with you . he felt he needed 7 points. There was a cross wind and Palardy had already missed one kick.

3 points would not have put us in position to win , 7 would. Good call , bad execution
