O-line/D-line

We have a 5th year senior playing at right tackle (O-line) who just earned a scholarship. I'm not saying he's not capable or good but generally speaking that doesn't bode well from an overall talent/preparedness perspective. I think they'll get better (as any line should with game experience), but we're not starting at the same spot as many other upper level SEC schools when considering collective O-line talent. We're still a step or two behind UGA, LSU, Bama, etc.....but we'll get there.

Pressure on Keeton came from blitzes mostly.

The D line was mediocre at best going against an O line with problems of its own.

The O line was terrible in run blocking even with them stacking the box. They still weren't winning one on one battles.

It only gets tougher after next week. Think this will be the team's biggest ongoing problems.

Kinda dispells that the narrative about our OL was going to be better... You just easily replace NFL players

The OL looked good on pass protection but wasn't creating space between tackles for the run game. It will be corrected. :)

There were a lot of different looks on the DL. Because of Keeton's talent, we saw 3 down linemen with AJ and Weatherd pressing into the gaps. Lots of speed in the gaps. USU had trouble with it all night. On the running downs, they used the 4 down linemen with O'Brien coming in. CBJ and staff had a really solid game plan to manage Keeton.

USU's game plan was to take away the run and challenge Worley to beat them through the air. Overall, it worked fairly well. Rather than judge the OL on their success in running the ball, I would give them decent grades on protecting Worley in his drops. Also I thought they did a good job of picking up USU's blitz schemes.

My overall assessment of the game was that CBJ and the staff had the team very, very well prepared for last night. Playing 21 true freshmen with very few miscues was something to be proud of. Also the team was really physical.

Keaton and talent should not be in the same sentence... Overrated

Keeton* and talent should be talked about and he is very talented. He can't do it by himself, but I'm glad our D made you think that. He's only 10 months removed from acl/mcl surgery, and you could tell it's still bothering him.

You will be in Crimson but by the 4th qtr. you could be in a bad menstrual cycle.

I believe you will be in the upper deck on the east side. The visitors are in sections 135, 136, & 140.

Watched the game again today and really wanted to pay attention to the trenches. I was not impressed with LG Marcus Jackson and C Mack Crowder. I figured those 2 would be our two best, however they missed assignments and were getting pushed in the backfield quite often. If we can't fire off the ball and create running lanes for our backs then it will be a long season. Our chances of going bowling rest on the play of our offensive line in my opinion. That's the only group that is holding us back (based on 1 game). I have confidence they will improve, just hope its quick enough. Really hope the coaches put in a lot of work with the run game and assignment blocking this week, because if you back and watch it...it's ugly.

Just shows that experience matters... I heard all off season that this line was going to be better than last years with no experience.. Just did not add up

Only after the second team came in.

Same here. I'm starting to think there's a reason we don't schedule Alabama or Florida the first or second games of the season.

I don't guess there's anything wrong with expecting flawless play the first time 5 guys start a game next to each other.

Just watched the game. Especially the Oline play. I totally disagree with the negavol above. I saw positive momentum most of the time at the point of contact (not every play). I also saw several one-on-one pancakes, including mulitple by Jackson and Crowder. Yes, there were also a few missed assignments and yes a couple of bad looking plays. Saw some short yardages converted to first downs via runs up the middle. Saw a Marlin Lane touchdown march over the middle from 11 yards out during 2 plays after the A.J. Johnson interception, all due to powerful OLine play. Overall the Oline should get a B- grade for handling the confusion, first night jitters, and sustaining some long drives. Third QTR and early 4th Qtr the Oline looked even better (Very Good). A nice WIN. Week 2 coming up.

I didn't go back and watch the game and even if I did I wouldn't have the patience to break it down by OL individual play. But I like your assessment better than the aforementioned Negavol so I'm going with your grade of B- and bumping them to a full B because I can. :)

The coaches know what they have and don't have on the lines moving forward.. Look at our recruiting.

4 OL.. 1 more with Richmond total 5
3 DE... 1 more with Phillips total 4
2 DT- 1 more in Tuttle total 3

Also half of this cycle dedicated to OL and DL

Which will probably drag down our class rating as skilled guys get the most stars but Butch knows what he needs and I have faith he will sign them. GBO

Not Negavol, just honest. It is freakin Utah State for goodness sake. I would hope our O line would look better in the late 3rd and 4th after we have run an uptempo offense all game and owned the time of possession (35 to 25 min). These arent 4 and 5 star d lineman we were going up against and we only mustered 110 yards on 39 carries and the only reason we did that well was because Lane and Hurd fell forward a yard or 2 every carry. They failed to turn linemen and failed to release off double teams and get to the 2nd level. We have got to fire of the ball better if we want to be successful against SEC opponents.

Take the orange shades off and let's be real here. If we get improved O line play we win 8 games, if not it will be 5/6. It's as simple as that.

I would say the DL was better than just 'mediocre at best'. They played very well against the run, especially the DTs on the inside, and the DEs were involved in a lot of the QB pressure, especially Barnett. Certainly there is a lot of room for improvement, and we don't know how they will hold up against an SEC OL, but my concern was that actually would look mediocre against a suspect OL in the opener, but they didn't. I was pleasantly surprised.
