O-line recruiting

I don't know if it is the recruits, the scheme or the coaches but we need to get this fixed.

It wasn't just the tackles last game, it was failed blocking by the guards, TEs and even RB. Mainly Pass blocking.

Communication is part of it. You got this guy, I got this guy, etc

A lot of our offensive woes go back to recruiting. The current O-line has 2 from class of '20 and 3 portal guys. There are no o-linemen on roster from class of '21. There are only 2 left from class of '22. Those 2 came in undersized at around 270ish and are buried on the depth chart. The '23 class looks better with Sham, Lang, and Johnson. '24 class looks promising and '25 looks good with Sanders and others. It will take some more time for these players to get ready for SEC play. If there isn't improvement in their development by end of next year, CJH will need to make a tough decision on Ellerbee. So far the portal players brought in have been disappointing. You miss out on 2 years of recruiting o-linemen like the Vols have it really sets back the program.

Find the right coach first

I wonder what the rankings are for Arkansas OL? They didn't seem to have too much trouble with our "best D Line in America" the other night. So tired of hearing excuses about talent. It's as bad as "Nico is a freshman". Arky's backup QB is an actual freshman and after 2 series he was punking our D.

I feel like people got too hyped about Heard and were all too happy to see Mincey out the door. Heard wasn't even a full-time starter at LSU (as a RT) and wouldn't have been one this year. Bro had no hopes of winning LT and had competition at RT. He started one game at RT..Will he be a good player? Who knows, probably. What we do know is that gerad Mincey was proven though injury prone. No idea if he was gone either way or he left because we pursued Heard. Heard hit portal Jan 2, Mincey hit portal on Jan 6 and Heard visited on the 8th and committed on the 21st. The timing seems interesting.

Well I hope Sanders gets put into the starting line slowly. With the track record VolNation has some would be bitching about Sanders if he wasn't playing well from Game 1 on..it's true, it's damn true.

but does little to make up for 2 nonexisting recruiting classes that should be the R-SR and Sr next year.
We don't have much of anything from the Class of 2021, but that's not Josh Heupel's fault. You have to remember that he was not hired until January 26, 2021.

There had been an early signing period in December, as well. He had no time to put a class together, and all of the elite recruits were off the board anyway. As far as transfers were concerned in the spring of 2021 .... that wasn't much of an option either, because at the time, it looked like we were going to be slammed by the NCAA for the violations uncovered under Pruitt. Tennessee looked toxic and undesirable at the time. Heupel did the best he could.

CGE will probably get the 2025 season to prove that he can cobble a solid o line together.
I've seen it said by former Vols who played Oline for TN that our OLine technique has been poor from Day 1 this year (and in the past) - see Sports Source YT channel. Isn't it true that we have not had a regular starter on OLine from a single one of Huep's recruits? If its true that CEllerbe is not developing proper technique and not developing players, then a very hard decision must be made by end of year by Huep and he will be hard pressed to do so given the loyalty he shows to staff and the fact that CEllerbe has been with him for several years. So given the above, if true, then our ceiling is very limited and our floor is quite low. Hard decisions upcoming..... We shall see.

OL is the hardest position to recruit and develop outside of a QB. There are two challenges: body size (limited by genetics) and body control (teachable but gets more difficult as you get heavier and stronger).

The pool of players who fit the SEC body size mold through their genetics is already shallow. You cannot pluck any chubby kid off a HS roster and hope for the best. You have to find players that have the right frame to fill out. That is an uncommon trait in the overall population and something that good OL recruiters can find and only really good OL recruiters can get on a roster, as you are fighting with a bunch of other really good programs for the same small list of players.

Then you get to development: size vs body control. You are trying to get them to add mass and strength without limiting their flexibility and mobility. This is where a lot of highly rated guys crash and burn. As you get to playing weight (both fat and muscle) you start to lose speed. Coaches have to balance that because you need guys that are fast enough to pull or block faster LBs downfield, while being big enough to stand their ground or ideally shove a 320+ DL.

This is the same challenge every program has, and is usually the barrier between good and great teams.

Actually, I'm barefooted, and what does that have to do with anything?🤪 If you don't believe it, go to the Rivals site.
Oregon has one of, if not the best, facilities in the country & one of the best funded NIL programs, all funded by Oregon alum & Nike head Phil Knight

UNLESS. GE leaves on his own for another gig (I would not anticipate that happening) then CJH ain't dumping him unless things get really, really ugly. I don't believe CJH would think they are near that point. JMO
The line play last game was atrocious. Hopefully that was just an anomaly.

Been hearing lot missed practices from that group and they have played like that. Heard and Campbell especially. Karic less but some.

Campbell misses every week to save legs for games.
