President Obama mandated Thursday that nearly all hospitals extend visitation rights to the partners of gay men and lesbians and respect patients' choices about who may make critical health-care decisions for them, perhaps the most significant step so far in his efforts to expand the rights of gay Americans.

What do ya'll think? Is this a good thing? A bad thing?

It's a way around the immediate family only rules. It's not a big deal, but it's coming.

In the end, it's a lame ass incrementalist step toward official recognition of gay couples as having the same legal rights as straight couples.

I don't give a rat's rear about the rights, but this was the pansy (to be PC) approach, which is a shock.

I think this will create some problems and there is a very effective way to do this already. P of A and a living will would cover the bases. In fact every one regardless of sexual preference or age should make their wishes known to a trusted to love one to carry out your final wishes in the event that you are unable.

Wouldn't you consider a life partner immediate family, BPV? I'm sure you would be upset if you awoke from a coma and found your girlfriend hysterically upset because the hospital wouldn't let her visit.

The key here is "patient's choice" which should be paramount considering they are the one's paying the hospital bill.

Perhaps I'm not seeing the bigger picture...

I didn't say I'm against the rights. I don't care who gets to visit whom. I'm simply saying that this is going to be a way around the typical hospital rules.

Gay couples could already make health care decisions for their partner by creating a power of attorney for health care decisions. As far as visitation goes, and making decisions where no POA has been executed, I have no problem with this. However, they need to make sure there is some form of verification process before extending these rights. Currently, the visitation and decision-making laws are in place in part to ensure patient safety. Partners are often going to have different last names, no marriage license, etc. It would appear relatively easy for someone to say they are the "partner" of a hospitalized patient in order gain access to the patient to harm them personally or to make end-of-life decisions that will do the same (i.e., pulling the plug).

If a homosexual lists their partner as their immediate family on patient admission forms, why does this even need to be discussed?? As far as rights go, trying to equate this to movement towards equal rights is silly, IMO.

there are simply times that filling out a list doesn't work.

The big picture is.....who the hell is BHO to tell private hospitals how to run their business

I agree 100%, and who are hospitals to decide who is and isn't immediate family to whomever is paying for services rendered by their facilities??

Again, read the article.

Also, I guess I'm confused as to whether you support this or not. I guess you do since you don't want the hospitals deciding who's considered immediate family?

You should really read the article before you open your mouth.

what...I can't make my own point....I read the article...I am speaking to the big picture and BHO sticking his nose where it does not belong....I know you depend on him, but I do not

All I am saying is that if your a paying customer, and they allow you in the front door, it's not up to them who you decide your immediate family is.

So, just because you are a paying customer, you get to tell a business what YOU are going to do in their building....I don't believe it works that way

A hospital isn't a typical business though. If you have someone you trust to make life or death decisions for you, it shouldn't matter who it is, the hospital should respect that, as long as there is proper documentation for it. I'm not advocating homosexuality by my stance, just lobbying that people should be able to make their own decisions based on their beliefs, without some bureaucrat telling them no. A hospital can be and is worse than the government is in a lot of aspects.

I'm sure a lot of hospitals share your view. Unfortunately, HIPAA forces them to make that determination.

Here, let me help:

The new rule will affect any hospital that receives Medicare or Medicaid funding, a move that covers the vast majority of the nation's health-care institutions.

Also, if you knew half of what you thought you knew, you'd be twice as smart as you are now.
