Obama gives "Shout-outs"

On Sheep, Wolves, and Sheepdogs by Lt. Col.Dave Grossman

One Vietnam veteran, an old retired colonel, once said this to me: “Most of the people in our society are sheep. They are kind, gentle, productive creatures who can only hurt one another by accident.” This is true. Remember, the murder rate is six per 100,000 per year, and the aggravated assault rate is four per 1,000 per year. What this means is that the vast majority of Americans are not inclined to hurt one another.

Some estimates say that two million Americans are victims of violent crimes every year, a tragic, staggering number, perhaps an all-time record rate of violent crime. But there are almost 300 million Americans, which means that the odds of being a victim of violent crime is considerably less than one in a hundred on any given year. Furthermore, since many violent crimes are committed by repeat offenders, the actual number of violent citizens is considerably less than two million.

Thus there is a paradox, and we must grasp both ends of the situation: We may well be in the most violent times in history, but violence is still remarkably rare. This is because most citizens are kind, decent people who are not capable of hurting each other, except by accident or under extreme provocation. They are sheep.

I mean nothing negative by calling them sheep. To me it is like the pretty, blue robin’s egg. Inside it is soft and gooey but someday it will grow into something wonderful. But the egg cannot survive without its hard blue shell. Police officers, soldiers and other warriors are like that shell, and someday the civilization they protect will grow into something wonderful. For now, though, they need warriors to protect them from the predators.
“Then there are the wolves,” the old war veteran said, “and the wolves feed on the sheep without mercy.” Do you believe there are wolves out there who will feed on the flock without mercy? You better believe it. There are evil men in this world and they are capable of evil deeds. The moment you forget that or pretend it is not so, you become a sheep. There is no safety in denial.

“Then there are sheepdogs,” he went on, “and I’m a sheepdog. I live to protect the flock and confront the wolf.” Or, as a sign in one California law enforcement agency put it, “We intimidate those who intimidate others.”

If you have no capacity for violence then you are a healthy productive citizen: a sheep. If you have a capacity for violence and no empathy for your fellow citizens, then you have defined an aggressive sociopath--a wolf. But what if you have a capacity for violence, and a deep love for your fellow citizens? Then you are a sheepdog, a warrior, someone who is walking the hero’s path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness, into the universal human phobia, and walk out unscathed.

Passive as in they can be lead astray easily.

Youre confused obviously. Passive people "assume" that things will turn out just fine in their favor, thus they do nothing to aide their own cause. Mr. Obama made a point to mobalize a large quantity of "historically" indiffrent voters, and got them to cast their ballot. Republicans who sat on their butts and didnt bother to vote could be blamed, but not very much. Look at the demographic stats on voter turnout.

In the end, its all neither here nor there. He won, we're dealing with it. We have had our eyes open as to how important it is to be an active participant in the political system. There are many "relevant" items to be critical of Mr. Obama. Your linkage of the recent PR mishap and the tragedy that happened yesterday, is not one of them. Its making you sound narrow minded and misinformed as to what the true issues are. This is trivial.

Being passive by your definition is incorrect. The word youre looking for is "naive", to which it is sounding more and more like you fall into it's classification.

This is the sort of thing that the Left jumped all over Bush for... It is making a mountain out of a mole hill. It's not easy to be under the microscope.

didn't Obama claim during the campaign that, unlike Bush, he was capable of doing more than one thing at a time?

it may be making something out of nothing, but for a guy hailed as the smartest person to ever be POTUS, he sure screws up a lot.

during press conference for Ft. Hood. He also spoke about the Healthcare bill. This is a complete disgrace to the proud men and women who serve this great country. His actions are inexcusable! To me, that shows his lack of respect for this Country and its Military personnel. Some will dismiss this as a "rookie" mistake, but anyone with an ounce of common sense and decency, would know that this was disrespectful.

YouTube - Fort Hood Tragedy -- Barack Obama Gives Odd "Shout-Out" Before He Comments on Massacre -- FOX News

You really ought to know what you are talking about before you post.

He had a scheduled meeting/press opportunity on a completely unrelated matter -- this Native American thing, I believe -- and then the news broke on this and they inserted some words on it in there for purposes of getting picked up by news agencies.

This is a blatant attempt to politicize the tragedy up there and make it seem as though Obama is uncaring for the victims, which is a flat out lie.

YOU OUGHT TO BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF FOR MAKING AN ISSUE OF THIS.

It is truly pathetic that you and your Fox and Drudge brethren would stoop so low as to use this tragic incident for political ammunition against Oabama.

You simply suck.

I am far from "naive"! We can agree to disagree on this matter. You are correct about a few of the republicans are to blame, but it was conservatives on both sides that believed the BS Obama was shoveling.

I think people are just trying to fabricate some anger over this press conference.

There are better examples of items that we should be outraged about concerning Obama. This is like #267 on the list.

I agree. Still it was a little amateurish for Obama to not play it a little better than that.

Yeah, playing the political card as it relates to tragic events should be saved for Democrats grandstanding at the funerals of various senators.

To think that Obama is really worried about anything other than turning our county socialist, is a waste of thought.
