WASHINGTON – Medicare has become a new focal point in the presidential campaign, with Democratic nominee Barack Obama accusing Republican John McCain of seeking "cuts in benefits, eligibility, or both."

Elderly voters are sure to take notice of such statements being made in a 30-second television ad that the Obama campaign will air in some crucial swing states. Obama hit the same theme in a campaign appearance Friday in Virginia.

But Obama's charge is built on a shaky foundation. The campaign's evidence that McCain would make such cuts relies on a Wall Street Journal article where no specific cuts were mentioned.

In what little detail McCain discusses Medicaid and Medicare on his campaign Web site, he makes no mention of cutting benefits. He says this about the two health programs, the first for the poor, the second for the elderly and disabled: "We must reform the payment systems in Medicaid and Medicare to compensate providers for diagnosis, prevention and care coordination. Medicaid and Medicare should not pay for preventable medical errors or mismanagement.".....

McCain's economic policy adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, said in an interview this week that allegations McCain would cut Medicare benefits are "just false."

Obama's claim of benefit cuts suspect

Yeah, he's not like McCain, McCain always tells the truth. Even if he voted against for what he's promising. Damn you Obama!

Isn't this what you guys want...I thought you all were against government healthcare? Where in the constitution does it say old people are entitled to healthcare?

This shouldn't be a bad think for McCain if the right really believes what they are touting. Instead of denying this I would think the republican party would celebrate it, McCain camp included. If old people get sick and can't afford private HC they should be on their own. Afterall, it isn't a government right.

Can someone explain exactly why universal health care is a bad thing? I really have no idea. Thanks!

UHC can be a bad idea if they do it like everything else and make it across the board with no exceptions. and by no exceptions I mean, are non citizens going to be able to fly over here and get free treatment?

How many countries currently have UHC? I thought it was pretty common elsewhere.

So you agree McCain should be cutting benefits and eligibility for older Americans? Obama may be lying, but you wish he was right?

It is in Europe, but they write it in that as a non-citizen you pay your bill. The US has the habit of not putting stuff like that in the law or bill being passed, much like people who send pregnant women over here to get the child citizenship and then return home only to come back when said child turns 18 with the entire family.

because free stuff is socialism or advertising. This doesn't qualify for the latter.

The system, run by the gov't will be less efficient, will degrade over time and will attract lesser docs.

Fianlly, I have to assume you've never seen the government's idea of healthcare.

of course he should be (and there is no chance in hell he'll ever admit that is what he should be doing). these things were put in place when older americans were the poorest in america and the young generation was the richest. now the young generation is by far the poorest and the old generation is the richest. why the hell should i have to pay 20% of my paycheck to give money to a bunch of rich old farts who have their house paid off and dont' spend any money on anything?

I guess I just would have rather not forked out over $800 for a couple extracted teeth last week.
But, if the gov't ran it, I would run the risk of having a less talented doc and maybe far inferior equipment and sterilitiy?

you would simply fork out the additional $800 in tax money, but it doesn't feel so bad when it's meted out over time.

Why should it be cut? I've been paying that tab for 45 years and now that the policy has matured you want to change the deal?

it's a tax on the young plain and simple, not a retirement plan. lots of things get cut because we don't have the money, why should this be different?

This is crap. Screw 'em, nobody deserves to live after age 62 if they can't afford HC, that is the American way.

So exactly how many young people are on fixed incomes?

Didn't start as a retirement plan but has morphed into one. Not a very good one, but a plan none the less. How many people retire with SS and MC as their main assets/income? I think many more than you believe.
