Obama restarts Guantanamo trials - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama reversed course Monday and ordered a resumption of military trials for terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, making his once ironclad promise to close the isolated prison look even more distant.

Obama made the change with clear reluctance, bowing to the reality that Congress' vehement opposition to trying detainees on U.S. soil leaves them nowhere else to go. The president emphasized his preference for trials in federal civilian courts, and his administration blamed congressional meddling for closing off that avenue.

I can't stand this guy. There were only a few issues from his campaign platform that appealed to me and he's gone back on all of them.

I don't know why people are surprised, all his "Hope and Change" crap was just that. Crap. I know it's asking a lot but maybe next time people will learn a little about the candidate before they blindly go vote for him like a bunch of mindless sheep.

Or, maybe the GOP will select better candidates...?

Dear God I hope so. I'm afraid he's going to get re-elected because the GOP is going to chug out another unelectable candidate.

It won't help. Don't you understand? He's a total Barack Star from Mars that can't be processed with a normal brain. Just elect the empty shirt so we can find out what's in it. :eek:k:

The idea was to open a new max security prison just for them. I know many people did not want to have them held in the U.S. I don't really have a problem with keeping them there because they'll get their Due Process. Just a question, do republicans have a problem with this because it was a campaign promise or because they want to close Guantanamo?

What do you mean by better candidate?

A) a Chris Christie-type
B) a Mitt Romney-type
C) a Ron Paul-type

a) I REALLY like Chris Christie.
b) Mitt Romney is unelectable. Period. If it happens, I'll be astonished.
c) Ron Paul is hands down the smartest guy in congress.

Is it true that only 1 trial has begun so far? Idk where I heard that at...

Do you mean in the entire time we've kept "enemy combatants" at Guantanamo? There have been many trials and at least two habeas cases that reached SCOTUS. see Boumediene v. Bush I think around 30-45 prisoners have been released by court order. Someone may want to double check that though.

Hahaha. I must have made it up in my head then.

In terms of actual trials based on charges by the U.S. you might be right. Most have been Habeas challenges because they were held without access to counsel and without being charged. I think as of last year 30 or so were going to have charges filed against them and 45 or so were held in under the "laws of war."

I also thought the reason Guantanamo was to remain open was because in January Congress passed the Defense Authorization Act which would not allow us to transfer the prisoners to the U.S. or other countries. If i'm getting this wrong let me know.

Gs has been missing for a few days... I see we have a replacement already.

Swing and a miss.

Are you going to argue that lots of people didn't just buy into everything Obama said without doing research on him or anything he stood for? If I were you, I wouldn't because they absolutely did.

I see you haven't been here much. It's the anti-Obama IMAGES that I was commenting on, nothing relative to the thread.

My mistake, I thought you were calling me out for my earlier post. It's been one of those days :hi:

Drones? check
Rendition? check
Patriot Act? check
Surge? check
Military tribunals? check

So how is Obama different than Bush other than vehemently attacking all of the above that he has continued and/or increased?
