Obama visited the Henry Ford Museum after fundraising in Michigan on Wednesday, and apparently thought this would be a good photo op.

What he said...

Obama said he took the time to sit in the bus to "ponder the courage and tenacity that is part of our very recent history."

but what he's really thinking...

"I wonder if they've gotten enough pictures of me yet."
"Does this look express enough melancholy?"
"So this is what the inside of a bus looks like!"
"Maybe they should get a few pics of me sitting in the Kennedy Lincoln next."

He may have just wanted to see the bus and sit in it.

I'm sure that's what it was. It was purely coincidental that someone had a camera and took a few pictures, and then decided to turn them over to MSNBC.

All politicians, for the most part, look for photo op moments to appeal to their base or to craft a subtle message they want distributed. I just thought this was taking pandering to a whole new level.

Really? smh.

I'm no Obama defender, but he's the President. Any time he is in public, there will be cameras. This was an important part of the Civil Rights movement. He is the 1st black President (if you don't count Bill Clinton). Without this, there's a real possibility he doesn't have a chance at the Presidency.

If he had landed on an aircraft carrier in a flight suit to declare a war to be over, that would be pandering. There's enough legit criticisms to be made about Obama without seeing boogeymen in situations like this. Waaaay too much butt hurt going on with that post.

The best photo op I've ever seen for a politician was Al Gore when running for POTUS. It was at Thanksgiving and they had cameras filming his family play football. It was so contrived it made you want to throw up. I wish I had the footage.

I know exactly what you are talking about. It was bad. Really bad.

You mean the first less than 50% black president?

I'm no Obama defender, but he's the President. Any time he is in public, there will be cameras. Do you really believe the public was around and/or close enough to take this picture? This was an important part of the Civil Rights movement. Completely agree. He is the 1st black President (if you don't count Bill Clinton). Without this, there's a real possibility he doesn't have a chance at the Presidency. What do you mean by this?

I'm not butt hurt at all and not sure why you would think that. My personal opinion, to which you are certainly free to disagree, is that Obama (or his campaign staff) is trying too hard to appeal to black voters and ultimately that may cost him votes. First he makes a "questionable" statement about the Trayvon Martin case, and then he allows for this photograph to be tagged and marketed. Imo this would be the equivalent of Romney having his picture taken in a private jet... it may be innocent enough, but it also isn't the right message his campaign should be sending out. I guess the real question is (as perhaps you've stated in your post above)... is Obama possibly worried about losing a significant part of the black vote?

In terms of pandering, I completely agree with huff's comment below (as well as yours concerning Bush but to a slightly less extent)... politicians need to be careful with photo ops because sometimes they do more harm than good.
