Obama supports eliminating criminal penalties for marijuana

I feel that pot should be decriminalized. It is a victimless "crime". There are certainly better ways to spend the tax money it takes to feed and house people whose only crime is related to pot.

Inconsequential issue. If someone wants to smoke pot in their private space I don't really care. If you are stupid enough to get arrested doing so, I don't care either.

Do you care that police recourses that could be used more wisely are being used to make these arrests?

I'm trying to figure out how that would work. Pot is still illegal but there are no consequences for growing or selling it?

That line of thinking could be extended endlessly. I don't like cops setting speed traps and would think those resources could be used more wisely as well. But it is a issue I don't need the next POTUS concerned about. I'll let the local police forces decide what crimes they feel are most worthy of pursuing. Hopefully the local police forces take into consideration the local senitment on matters.

Why not allow the states to make their own decisions about pot? Better yet tie it to the fireworks business (make it the same license). At the very least Tennessee's economy would explode.

Why would I not just go buy it from the guy down the street who doesn't have a license?

regulate it just like the govt regulates alcohol and tobacco.

because once it's sold in stores that guy on the street will be out of business

He would? He doesn't have to package it, transport it, or pay taxes on it. Why the hell would someone buy it from a store over buying it from a neighbor?

pot smokers are lazy? Why bother your neighbor when you can buy weed with your Funyuns?

But seriously, did a huge market for homemade alcohol ever happen after prohibition? If made legal then pot will be similar to moonshine.

Been through that before. Much easier to grow and conceal pot than liquor. I know a lot, lot, lot of local yocal pot farmers...or at least I did growing up. I knew very few local distillers. Obviously since liquor is legal that cuts into the story some. But I think pot is so much easier to grow than liquor is to make. I knew too many idiots that could do it.

All states should be able to decide if they want pot legal or not.It just seems to me the wrong intoxicant is legal.

So everyone wants its to be legal to grow, sell and smoke pot?

Because Obama said he's not for legalizing it just decriminalizing it. How would that work?

To legalize it would mean that people would be smoking pot on the street corner, in their car and everywhere, it's legal. To decriminalize it would still put restrictions on it such as with alcohol now. It is legal to drink alcohol if you are over 21 but it's illegal to drink and drive.
