Yes, let the ignorant masses make decisions for everyone. Look at what that has done for employment situation in France.

maybe the quality of candidate has something to do with it. Do you actually think that ~45% could cast an intelligent vote?

Exactly, and that most of the voting population's thought is that all politicians are the same, dem or rep, lib or cons. They are all in it for themselves, greed, and power. So what does it matter, not my view on whole, but I know alot of folks think that and have thought that for a while now. Thanks ya'll

When other developed countries lead us in VT by 25 percentage points or more, I'd say it is.

Where are you getting your stats? Here's a quickie I found.

Compared to Other Nations

Worldwide, many industrialized countries are experiencing a decline in voter participation. In France, the voter turnout rate for parliamentary elections has fallen from nearly 80 percent of registered voters in 1945 to 60 percent in 2002. Voter participation in U.K. parliamentary elections fell from over 70 percent in 1945 to 59.4 percent in 2001. In the United States, voter turnout for the presidential elections fell from 79.9 percent in 1972 to 67.4 percent in 2000. (Source: International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance).

The youth vote is also falling worldwide. The U.K. Electoral Commission concluded that the low turnout rate in the 2001 election was primarily due to youth not voting. In the United States only 36 percent of youth between the ages of 18 – 24 voted in the 2000 presidential election.

Canada slightly ahead, France at the same rate, UK at the same rate...

Which are the developed countries with 85% VT?

That would be Iran, Venezuala, Cuba, they have a nice ralling cry, the dictator comes out says "everyone votes, vote for me or I kill you", works well.

To her credit, France held steady in the 70% range throughout the 1990s (for Presidential not Parliamentary) elections.

Australia and Greece are up there in the 80's - so far I haven't found many that meet the 80-85% VT needed to justify the 25 point claim.

Israel maintains a steady voter turnout above 80%...I don't know that I would go with the "guns and electric chairs" argument there, though...

There certainly is a likely "size" issue involved. Hitting 80% of the US population is a different situation than 80% of the Israeli population.
