Observations ASU and OSU Games

Carter + Superglue = Low scoring Mitchell. Carter is the best defender we have and she could give Mitchell a tough time. If that doesn't work, some of the previously mentioned ideas.

Lady Vols are going to have to play like Roller Derby b-ball in this tourney. The officiating last night was pretty much "have at it girls".

I don't understand the officials letting a lot of fouls being not being called,after all the emphasis placed on not touching anybody during the regular part of this year

you utilize a standard 2-3, 3-2, 2-1-1, 1-3-1 etc for one of two reasons in basketball:

1) Because they're so much better than you you have to go fetal, or, 2) because you're so much better than them that you use it to take the heat off your foe.... The exception to this rule is the box-1 utilized to stop a player that is unstoppable one on one.

In the case of Mitchell, it is a strategy.

Coaches use a zone defense because a zone defense can be very effective, especially if you have players with length. Coaches use it to stop teams with a good inside game, or to stop teams with guards who are good off the dribble. A lot of teams struggle against a zone defense--see Arizona State against us. See us against just about everybody who played zone against us this year.

Why was Cooper not good for large part of the season? Because she is a penetrating guard and does not have the game, yet, to be effective against a zone. We've many times in recent years have been better defensively in zone than man. You do what works to slow down the other team. Teams didn't play zone against us this year because they were demonstrably better or demonstrably worse--they played it because it was effective against us, or, conversely, we are ineffective against a zone. I'm sure we'll play man and zone against osu, and we'll see which is more effective. Certainly, the zone was against ASU. Jim Boeheim (sp) is a HOF coach in large part because of the 2-3 zone his teams have always played. Whatever works.
