My observations from the game...
- for my 1st time at Neyland it was an incredible place to visit
- I was surprised at how late fans showed up after kickoff
- the bands traditional performance bringing the team onto the field was awesome
- the '3rd down for what' chant is so cool
- parking was so weird. $30 one place & $60 right next door
- wearing my Red Wolves shirt was very eye-catching to the flood of fans in orange
- everyone was very courteous & welcoming
- the video screen cannot be seen at all from where I was sitting
- the arrogance of fans is amusing to me
- when we(ASU) scored or made a great play, how easily your fans turn on the players/team until a good play happens "& totally redeems yourself"
- your kicker needs work
- I was very let down with the turn out of ASU fans
- I am not a fan of having your coaches name/pic on t-shirts. I saw a lot of those at the game. To me that is praising a person & not the team. You are Vols fans no matter who the coach is
- finally I think that you(fans) were caught off guard with our level of talent. You pulled away late in the game, but it was closer than the score indicated. When time became a factor, we had to take risky moves to keep the ball & when they failed, you capitalized on it.
I think that you guys will hover around the middle in conference play, but not go bowling this year. What is great is the level of raw talent with the massive freshmen class. Butch will groom those guys & you will be contenders in a few years.
Best of luck this season & thanks for the experience from a Red Wolves fan!!!
-Neyland is incredible plays to visit, my first visits when I was young solidified that I was going to be a Vol fan
-Noon games people always stroll in a little late, maybe their not finished tailgating or just late rolling out of bed on a lazy Saturday, I don't know but 99,000+ isn't bad attendance for a game against a perceived inferior team.
-I love Third Down for what, but I've noticed it depends on what section you are sitting in, some people need to loosen up a bit
-Yeah unless you do a parking permit, parking is usually a mad dash, I usually have my typical spots I like, one key is getting there early just in case
-Usually its Vol Orange that stands out for me, I like in UK country- and I get looks
-What section were you sitting in, I've never been in a section where I could get my eyes on the board somehow...
-Yeah most people are kind and generally want to be welcoming to other fans, then of course there are "those fans" that take things too far, I think every major college/sports teams has those idiots
-Vol fans are quick to get angry for many reasons, including our recent disastrous seasons, long lost success. Sometimes its even due to the heat I think. If a team like Arky St. is deemed inferior by certain folks then if we don't crush you by like 40-50 points then it wasn't satisfying. If every play doesn't work perfectly then something is wrong with so-and-so. This happens sometime against better competition but it comes out more readily against the Arky States of the world.
-Our kicker actually sprained his foot in practice, but he does still despite the injury needs to work on consistency. But I couldn't complain yesterday considering.
-The turn out of a fans of a team like yours seemed typical for this kind of game- I think most don't want to travel to watch a team lose, lol.
-I think you'll see more tees with coaches names on shirts in the SEC in general. Of course the fan bases are quick to turn on them if success isn't coming. They are showing support for a coach who is the face of the team so I don't see a problem with it.
-Arky St. is a very talented football team, you can't win the Sun Belt being a pushover. Actually most informed people weren't surprised by your talent. But I would have to say that your team had to take risky plays all game, like the fake punt (if you hadn't had that one play I think the perception of "how close it was" wouldn't be there. That one play/drive kept it close) just to hang around, and you were able to capitalize on our mistakes. I'll give you all the credit for capitalizing early on good field position and scoring on emotional energy. Our punter who was also hurt last week, had a hard time punting, and kept giving you guys great field position. Our special teams in general needs work, their young and make mistakes. These kinds of games seems to happen week in and out with teams across the country. UT especially has a history of giving teams like yours too much wiggle room. I can think of South Alabama last year. Or even Memphis back in '98
but its no indication of how our season will turn our. especially how young we are. Being a noon game, on a short week, looking forward to Oklahoma sometimes its easy to have a let down. I always tell people games like these its important to win and not have injuries. I'm Butch has some teaching points this week, our players will need all their attention this week against Oklahoma.
As far as going bowling I hope your wrong. But seeing that we play in the SEC its hard to be definitive with predictions. I think we are in improved team from last year with the exception of the O-Line, which showed grow up big time by SEC play. I think being young we'll grow up fast and surprise some people. My expectation is 6-6 maybe 7-5 with a bowl game. We're 2-0, the rest of our wins will come against: Chattanooga, South Carolina, UK, and Vandy
that be a total of 6 wins
I think we upset one if not two of these teams Mizzouri, Mississippi, or Florida. 7-5 is doable but it'll take an upset. If we win against teams that we are supposed win to, baring terrible injuries like last year- if you have to rely on your third string QB to win you won't. We may play well against Georgia but I'm not counting on it. Oklahoma will be a tough road game that I don't think we have a chance of winning. I think we have a better chance of going bowling this year then we have in a long time. Also i think its impossible to hover around the middle of the conference and not go bowling with the kind of teams that are in the SEC. To hover in the middle means you win about half of your SEC games
I'll take 4-4 in conference games, thats 7-5
lol. But I get what your saying.
Also I think you guys will fair really well this season and I expect you to continue with your run of Sun Belt Championships...
