Off Season Fixing?

We will be at this point once again next year, or worse, unless Holly learns to coach, or hire assistants that can. We did better in the last few games up until we lost to Syracuse. Tonight we were out coached and outplayed. I love Carter but she is a disaster. We reverted back to our old selves, turnovers, defense simply collapsed and looked dysfunctional. We have three point shooters but since they became Lady Vols they have a difficult time hitting their butts with both hands.

Holly has GOT to recruit some good players for 2016. Recruiting isn't going to help if you can't coach. They can come from JC, be unsigned 3 stars or graduate students with eligibility. The big issue is this staff lacks the ability to coach up their ball players. The Cuse do not have but one five star, but you hav to admit that Coach Hillmann has done a mush better job coaching up his players than we have with our seven All Stars.
What does that tell you? COACHING! There's the perfect example of what a REAL coach can do with lesser talent. Hire Hillman! What do you think he could have done with our players? They sure as _ell wouldn't have been standing around. Butler hits 3 3s and he calls her to the sideline and gets in her face about something; maybe bad defense I don't know but he obviously was coaching instead of letting an opposing team run 12 pts off and not call a timeout (Holly).

I posted about this in another thread how Hillman ripped Butler twice one was on a bad turnover and the other was on defense. Not Holly all she do is jump up and down.

Where does the Lady Vol program go from here?
Downward if a coaching change isn;t made.

What can be done to make the returning players better?
Hire Coach Jumper.

Thoughts for discussion?

:eek:lol::eek:lol::eek:lol::eek:lol: I think we need to shoot quite a bit higher than a self-proclaimed internet coach that proves his point with youtube videos of 6th grade girls. The fact is if you were as good as you claim and with your age, you would be at least a highly successful high school coach winning multiple state championships. You're not even on a team and are begging for coaching scraps on-line. Please tell us how such an outstanding coach is not even part of a team? Any team.

Having watched this team all season I have come to the conclusion that the team was built wrong. To many players with the same strengths and weaknesses. The team should have more post players one or two more with a lot of length and size. We also need at least a couple of guards that can fill it up with consistency from three point range and mid-range. We have a couple of slashers already in Diamond and Cooper although both need to perfect their technique.
You must build a team through recruiting that can attack any defense and defend the basket. We have nothing in the three point game no matter how many five stars players we have and we also have very little defensively for being able to protect the rim and prevent the dribble drive.
I think all our players are more athletes than basketball players. In the future we need to get skilled basketball players not athletes playing basketball. It doesn't matter if you allow 65 to 70 points if you can score 80 and that is how I would build a team.

I agree with you on the post players but it will be hard press to find one for 2016 and if we do that player will need to be ready play from day 1. We don`t need a project. As for guards you are 100% correct we need guards that can fill it up from with consistency from three point range and mid-range. Look at Alexis Peterson she keeps the defense on there heels with her drive, mid-range and three point shooting. Cooper will never be that kind of guard that`s not her game and that`s what this team is missing.

I wish Reimer would transfer here. I know a lot of people say she is a head case but she could take up the slack for Graves and Harris could give us a few minutes like Moore.

At guard we need to find our female Kevin Punter in the juco ranks. There are several girls that could give us some minutes and I believe our present players could become scorers if they were willing to work. Regardless 2017 is the big year for this program to either get back in the top ten focus or fall to the middle of the pack.

If we could get KK and Harrison and a couple of elite guards we'll be back. I think Diamond will only play one more year so we have a lot of work to do in recruiting.

I know some think we ran into a buzz saw and were defeated thusly..... I think that we should have won the game..... going we need premium guard play.... we need to value the basketball..... guards make up the machine that drives us..... i was unimpressed by Mercedes' defense.... what is she doing defending at the 3 point line, and if it is indeed part of our coaching strategy, it needed to be changed when tyne Syracuse demonstrated that they could dance right around Mercedes....I do not agree that she was in the faces of Syracuse's 3 point shooters..... going forward our shot selection needs to be better.... that makes for a better shooting percentage..... yesterday we had what ... over 20 turnovers... at this level you cannot win with that sort of performance..... we need to move the ball around and not revert to quick 3 point attempts.... and what was decision about at end of one of the quarters.... when we got ball with 20 seconds and decide to shoot with 10 seconds left in quarter... of course we missed, and they came down and scored with 3 seconds left.... again, broken record ....directly or indirectly it all comes down to coaching!!

Pat hadn't been to a Final Four since 2008. So it's not like it's just Holly (I don't think she's the answer, just merely pointing out facts).

You are correct but again it is irrelevant facts as you are comparing apples and oranges. Since 2008 Coach Summit earned some slack with all her championships. Looking back the program was in a slight decline and we all now know the primary reason. Holly, on the other hand, has had four years to bring the program back and every year it just goes down and down. Now, we are at the point where the top tier players do not want to come to Tennessee and we will probably lose some players off the current team.

These are facts that matter!

2016 Class Sabrina Ionescu #4 player in the country she has good size for a sg about 6-0 and looks like she can create your own shot off the dribble and is lights out from 3. She is still on the board https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb8se1dOavk

Good post, djtee, she seems to be an excellent player. Before the early signing period, her top choices were Cal,Oregon and Oregon State. But still not signed. Certainly worth pursuing, though she seems destined for the west coast.

Quite a few good players on the board but not expecting to get any of them.

Sabrina Ionescu
Felicia Aiyeotan prospects nation top 100
Tyasha Harris number 18 prospects and number 27 hoopgurlz
Areilla Guirantes number 44 prospects nation. Saw film on her she can really shoot the ball can get to the basket.

We could get these four and have a great class. Aiyeotan is 6'9" and has improved dramatically this last school year.

There is also some jucos that could help this team.

Jhanice Stokes Jhanice Stokes | #30 | C | Denmark Technical College - NJCAA Region 10

Quantesha Patterson Quantesha Patterson - East Mississippi Athletics

Lakyesha Stennis Southwest Tennessee Community College | Women's Basketball

Nachalie Dejesus NJCAA

to name a few but I expect Holly will go with the nine she has and add three star Harris and that will be our team.

Dejesus is the only one of that lot that looks even slightly promising. And that's assuming that she'll be better than the plethora of All American guards and 5 star guards that Tennessee currently has who can't play at this level.

I mean look Holly is running out of options we struggle to score points all season. And DeShields is the only player that is capable scoring point`s when we need them. It may be a long shot but give it a shot also Tyasha Harris of Heritage Christian High School #27 player in the country is still out there.

You look at some of our players stats and wonder how were going to be a good team next year if they don't get better.

Nared 34 percent from the field and 25 percent from the three and she was our starting wing forward.
Diamond only 39 percent from the field and 25 percent from the three.
Reynolds 34 percent from the field and 19 from the three.
Cooper 37 percent from the field and 27 from the three.
Carter 36 percent from the field and 25 from the three.

This was our major perimeter players who got all the minutes and you can't win consistently with these yearly stats. I think that the juco players I listed could easily beat these stats. All five of these players need to shoot hundreds of shots per day and not with their present shot they need to have guidance from someone who knows how to shoot the basketball. If we are to avoid double digit losses next season all five of these players will have to improve dramatically.

I don't think any of the players on the Tennessee roster should have been five stars other than maybe Diamond. The stats I see these players put up are not even three star stats so even though they were awarded five star status by a service none have lived up to that ranking including Diamond who's stats say 4 star more than five. In order to be a five and play on the perimeter you should be a 45 percent overall shooter and at least 30 percent from the three. We don't have anybody on the team that can do that.

I knew she wouldn't pick us even if we had recruited her which I am positive we didn't. I suspect we'll try to sign Kamera Harris when she visits and that will be the team next season a total of 10 players.
I guess we'll try Dunbar inside with Harris and Russell everything else will be the same.
If these players come back next season shooting the ball like they did this season wrap up another 10 plus loss season I suspect. Players have to get a lot better as we have no one coming in to offer any help.

This team also needs a pg that can shoot guard Jordan play the point but has no offensive game. Cooper has no offensive game other then that same between the legs spin move. Note teams have caught on to that look what happen the last game.

I'm guessing we wind up signing 3 to 4 players. And we all sit back and say....WHO IS THAT?????

You could be correct remember we fail to sign any player in the class of 2016 and now it`s slim pickings. There are only 2 players left from the class of 2016 the #4 and #27

Prospects Nation has a player listed number 44 Giurantes I wish we would try to sign. She is listed 98 on Hoopgurlz. She has went off for over thirty in several high school games this past season.
