Off Season Moves?

Can anyone on VN say unequivocally without a doubt who calls our offensive plays each series of each game?

That person, needs some schooling, IMO, on how better to call plays to our strengths and weaknesses. Too many calls this year were just plane ol WRONG.
No they can’t.
But they can say unequivocally without a doubt that whoever is calling plays knows more than any poster on Volnation does about their players and offense.

My concern is:

1. Secondary play. Chief told me yrs ago that some DCs coach players to “look” @ the WR’s eyes instead of turning around. Either way, our DBs are bad and not getting better.

2. Penalties - it’s a problem. At some point, it comes down to holding. I listened to Mike Tomlin’s interview on a podcast recently. He said coaches teach their players, both college and pro, when you can get away with grabbing the jersey, etc. If penalties are called, then the coaches will adjust to how the game is called. Something isn’t right as too many penalties.

3. Players- most of our roster are Pruitt’s players. I am hopeful Heup’s players will be ready for the big stage as we will find out next season.
While I'm not thrilled with how this staff has performed this year...on both sides of the ball...I'm convinced that it's due, in large part, to the tools available to them. Look, there's a reason teams spend a fortune on recruiting. There's a reason UGA and bama are always in the mix for the SEC and natty. It really is about the jimmies and joes. That being the case it's very likely that once these younger players reach the field, this coaching staff will look pretty darned good again....and that includes Martinez. They can take me and put me in man coverage and I'll guarantee "eye discipline" but I'm not going to be anywhere close to being able to make the play the staff wants me to. At the end of the day, we're playing with limitations and a lot of them in really important spots. This was always supposed to be at least a 4 year process or however long it takes to flip this roster and get if filled with Heupel's kids. I still do. We fans just got a little starry eyed over last years success thinking that Heupel was some sort of coaching god who could beat anyone with any roster because of his genius. I'm guilty as well. This year snapped me back to reality. I think Heupel needs a couple more really good recruiting classes and some immediate help in the portal to maintain momentum. By year 2 of Nico's reign, I think we'll see some signs as the course this ship is really on. Next year is gonna be tough. I've accepted that.

Well, you answered a mystery that should not be a mystery, should it? Perhaps not knowing who is our offensive play caller is systemic?

Thanks and I think I am asking a fair question, am I not? Seems quite odd not having a name to the person/s that call our O plays, right?
I was talking about the OC situation with a friend of mine yesterday. He kinda said just like you. Who is truly calling plays? I don’t know but my guess is the majority of the plays are being called by Heupel. I could be wrong. I wonder, would Halze go back to being a QB coach and let Heupel hire a good OC? If he would, I would be throwing money at Jeff Lebby.

Exactly. And not trying to be an armchair QB however, I have watched a lot of football in 60+ years and can spot a good play caller a mile away. We have not had that luxury this year, for if you go back and watch games you will see that way too often, the wrong type of play was called. And I really am using last year as a blueprint to compare this to, for short passes, good runs and keep the clock moving (minimal incompletes) is what made us so damn explosive. How many 2 minute drives did we have this year? I honestly do not believe it was the lack of talent on the field, for we have a better running game and above average receivers and QB.

If Anyone in VN Land can find out definitively who was calling our plays, I for one would love to know and, not sure why it is such a secret.

Thanks

Based on what I read this morning in 6 years Heupel has never fired or relieved a coach.
Good - he can keep that streak alive by just not re-signing Martinez. His contract is up after the season; only coach on staff in that situation, I believe.

This "fire Banks" stuff is absolutely nuts, but I can't say I'd be opposed to moving on from Willie.

Set a meeting with Heupel and set him straight.

Agree 100%. I posted that Nico’s jr year (2025 season and his jr yr) is the yr we will know how good Heup and company are in recruiting and player development. Last yr was awesome until the Jr game. The bowl game didn’t impact me one way or the other as it’s a different team and bowls are not the same nowadays.

This yr was disappointing as I thought we’d compete with every team for four qtrs instead of all our losses being by double digits. The lack if adjustments concerned me vs. Mizz and Bama. We were our coached.

We have young talent so time will tell.

Let me preface this by saying that I am never "fire the coach " guy, however...

As the season winds down, we know that in a month or less, there will be some shakeup on coaching staff.

I am always interested by who is on the market and what are the sexy names floating around at seasons end. Who would you want to replace and with whom? You always know that coaching staffs shift and evolve over time, where could we improve?

I have a feeling that Zach Arnett will be a guy that a lot of people will clamor for. What says you all?
Why would Zach be sought after?

What concerns me is that we won big last year and mostly with Pruitts recruits, can we replace the ones lost with equally as good or better?
