Milton is a terrible fit for this offense. People don’t really understand how important his reactions are. A lot of the plays we call are run pass options where he has his choice of handing it, pulling it and running, or pulling it and passing. He looks over the defense and sees 5 in the box (or 4 sometimes with Austin Peay- they played a 3 man front with 1 linebacker in the middle). Every read he has says run the ball against that. Our 5 linemen couldn’t block their 4 or 5 guys so we’d get some yardage but can’t overcome all the first and fifteens. To me, the real problem is his unwillingness to run. For a guy bigger than Tebow and almost as big as Cam Newton he has no interest in getting hit. I thought maybe against AP they told him not to keep it but against Florida he’s got to keep them honest. This offense will not work without a running threat at QB. People remember when we were doing this with Justin Worley a few years ago. He was a much better passer than Dobbs but was no threat to run. When Dobbs got his chance, it suddenly clicked. People expect us to throw deep every play against a team dropping 6-7 in coverage? It’s a simple numbers game. They don’t trust Joe Milton… that part is obvious.
