I would like to see Tennessee go back to a pro style type offense that is centered around a good powerful running game. I hate throwing the ball 50+ times a game. What is everyone elses opinions?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we pretty much ran a pro style but with spread sets...we weren't a true "spread" team? I think we were essentially playing to our strengths offensively...running the ball was not one of those.

I like the power run too but our current offense works fine. I think it would be worthwhile to have continuity on one side of the ball.

I think one of our problems--running a pro style is that you have to have not one but at least two quality running backs. The last really good back we had here was Montario Hardesty. I'll give Dooley and Chaney credit for this: they were multiple on offense and threw the ball 50 times because we pretty much had to--our personnel has never really aligned just right to make us a better running team. This past season the line was great but neither Marlin Lane or Neal were that much to write home about.

I think we need to get back to running the ball quick scoring is great. But when the opposite team grinds us down with the run that is when our Offense hurts our defense

I would consider a pro style offense when lots of I-form and single back sets are used and the TE is used a lot. We really run a spread offense IMO. Pro style offenses usually rely on down the fielding running and playing man to man on the o-line. I believe Chaney loves the zone blocking schema if I'm correct which is better suited for a pass heavy offense.

If the offense wasn't always having to play catch up in the second half, we would have seen a lot more running. The running game was respectable this year. 4.7 ypa isn't bad. If we were able to run it in the 4th quarter and wear teams out, it would have been even higher.

Our offense is pretty much pro style now. Just needed a feature back who could grind lots of yards. We threw a lot because we did that well. Our line would look amazing with a really good back carrying the load.

We don't run a spread offense, it is pro style--our offensive sets look nothing like West Virginia or Oklahoma State...we have FB's on our roster..we may use variations of the spread set because every team is "multiple" on offense...but we are not a true spread team.

Put all of our focus into the defense. Recruit on offense like we have been, but focus primarily on defense all the way. Defense wins.

I want to see us actually get some BIG, BIGTIME Running Backs. I'm talking about backs like Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida and yes, even Clemson all have. I want backs, who can run over dbs and lbs.

I agree that our offense is pretty much pro style already, and also that having to come from behind hurt the run. If you look at yards per carry, this is the best we did since 2004 in that category. :clapping:

The exciting thing to me is that Graham is recruiting Derrick Green, and if we keep Graham I have heard we still have a great shot at Green. Consider also that 4/5 OL are likely back, and we could be pretty darn good running the ball next year.

I believe that if the AJ beastback role and the Bartholomew blocking back role could have been combined in one true fullback, our running game would have looked significantly different.

We must become stronger in the trenches. On both sides of the ball. Our running game was not bad this year. But it is far from where it should be.

Shows you how lacking our Rbs are that we have a LB in the game in key situations

I have the complete opposite opinion
I love airing the ball out all game.. especially on first down.. you say you hate throwing the ball 50+ times?
how about 30-40 times? we only threw the ball over 50 in the 4ot game vs miszzou. i get so tired of vol fans who call for us to run the ball every play. i guess you guys miss randy sanders.
i don't want to have the same formula as bama and lsu and everyone else... run the ball play good d. and have a game managing qb. boooo! this is UT. wide receiver U.
i want to win and win in style! keep Jim Chaney!:good!:

if i had to guess id say were in the shotgun or pistol 75% of the time. and have 3wr or more on the field 75% of the time.. id say thats awfully close to being considered a spread o

If you have a gunslinger, then throw the ball....

I want to see a good spread type offense, that makes it advantageous to score more points even when lacking in talent. Couple that with an almost guaranteed top 25 class talent, that UT almost always gets every year, we should win a lot of games. Would love to have La Tech's system here. They were the 4th ranked passing offense and the 17th ranked rushing offense, all with La Tech talent.

We need a great zone coach to come in here.

Nick Saban, Chip Kelly, and Urban Meyer are all great zone coaches (not saying we need one of them, but someone in that mold). When zone blocking is properly executed, it's unstoppable.

A balanced attack works better for the team as a whole. One negative to the quick strike offense is that you don't give your defense time to rest. We saw that this year with the addition of CP where the Vols were able to put up a lot of points in in 2-3 minute drives and the defense was right back on the field.

Read option. Sprint draw. Read option. Read option. Throw to TE in flat. Read option. Play action pass to slot. Read option. Read option. Throw to other TE down middle.

(as they say "rinse, dry and repeat")

Don't build your d..n offense on 35+ yard strikes to win games. The probabilities are low for consistent success and you kill your own defense b/c of their on-field time. Ultimately you start having to compete in a shoot out and competing with yourself as to if your offense can continue its own scoring strikes or not. When you don't, the team gets down on itself and meltdown ensues.
