I am still skeptical. But not nearly as much as I was, this morning.
After watching the press conference.......seeing and hearing the excitement in his face and voice, I'm already beginning to warm up to this man.
But, does he really grasp what is in front of him?
He is being asked to bring a proud institution, back from the dead. He will be asked to recruit against the best recruiters in the NCAA. All of whom believe, as he does, that winning at recruiting begins at home. I seriously doubt, we are going to win alot recruiting battles in Georgia, Florida, SC, Alabama and Louisiana. Now, with A&M in the SEC, appearing to be as strong as ever, we can forget Texas also. Memphis is going to be a battleground. Saban and Miles pretty much own Memphis, already.
The Great State of Tennessee, is not so great, when it comes to HS Football talent. Butch will be forced to recruit in out of the way places. California, Oregon, etc. There are great football programs, coaches and recruiters all around us, in every direction.
I wish him luck. It is not going to be easy. It never has been. But, in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's, we were able to steal talent from Ga, SC, FL, etc. BECAUSE WE WERE ALREADY GOOD. Now Cheek has raised academic standards, plus our recent downturn, many kids, as well as coaches, are no longer interested in UT.
But, he's enthusiastic, and he said all the right things. Defense wins championships. He's gonna get busy, immediately, recruiting and evaluating the talent on campus. HE WANTS THIS TO BE HIS DESTINATION. He fully understands what perks come with success and the blowback that comes with failure. This job will make or break him. He has balls. I like that. He's going to need them.
So, in closing, I'd just like to say.....Welcome to Big Orange Country, Coach Jones!!!
Go Big Orange!!!!!!!!
