Official Book Thread - What You're Reading & Everything Book Related (merged)

Well I found out the name of the book involving a girl framed for murder is Wanted. I was surprised to find out Caroline Cooney possibly most famous for the face on the milk carton wrote this book.

So far it is has been exiting.

I can't seem to get into a book and finish it since The Sixth Extinction. I'm working on The Martian, Love and Math, and The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2014 right now. So many books I want to read in my queue.

I aaw on those sale tables a history of organized crime at Barnes and Noble.
As a sucker for anything mob related whether fictional or non fictional I'l be buying it.

Dog on It
It's the first book in the chet and bernie series. Chet is a dog and narrator as both he and his owner Bernie solve mysteries.
This is a series I'll start reading.

How to win friends and influence people - Carnegie

Catcher in the Rye - Salinger

Congo - Crichton

How to win friends is kind of "no duh" type stuff.

Catcher in the Rye was good. Very flawed first person perspective.

Congo so far is awesome. Just a science fiction thriller that keeps you in suspense.

I don't get why Catcher in the Rye is so popular. I liked it, but doesn't seem like it would be such a time-honored classic.

I think it is because of the counter culture aspects of the story as well as Holden being a deeply flawed, but still relatable and likable character. I'm kinda with you, though. I liked it, but I wouldn't say it is altogether life changing or anything like that.

I haven't done a good job staying connected to this thread.

These are the books I've read recently

"Monsters: The 1985 Chicago Bears and the Wild Heart of Football" - informative and entertaining

"Breakfast of Champions" - Classic Vonnegut

"The Martian" - Absolute thrill ride the entire way through. I have my nitpicks about this book but it is an incredible read.

Currently Reading: "In the Heart of the Sea"

I'm currently making my way through The Martian. It's obviously written by a scientist and not an English major, but it's very enjoyable.

Finished The Martian. It was good, but quite an intensive read. I skipped sections where the numbers just became cumbersome.

Beginning Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind.

The Racketeer
Middlesex

Recommend both. The first is Grisham so you know what you are getting. The second is a generational novel about a Greek family that immigrated to Detroit during the auto boom. It covers 3 generations and is fascinating.

Dark star safari - Paul Theroux

Enjoyable and informative for people that originally knew almost nothing about Africa (me).
