Something that's always annoyed the hell out of me is the whole "The" Ohio State University BS.

Is there another Ohio State University out there that doesn't have "the" in the title? Stupid...

I think part of it is that the school's full name is "The Ohio State University," (as opposed to say, "Florida State University") which it has been since 1878.
