Official Game Thread - SECT: Friday, 1pm (ESPN) vs. MSU

Unfortunately, we are starting to see teams realize that we have no scorers except DK and there is little or no risk to sending two men after him and forcing him to give up the ball. That eventually causes him to start taking hurried and marginal shots ,
Bama started the approach and the first decent team they see in the NCAA will surely present the same challenge.
Really difficult to see the answer because the team has no serios threat to the approach and despite all the wishing that SV and JJJ would find their shot it is not going to happen
They do not even want to shoot
Great season because of the play of DK
It surprises me that Santi, JJJ, and Gainey can’t consistently hit open threes. I don’t expect 50% but “ 1 for - insert number over previous games” is unfathomable. JJJ made shots @ Rupp but he’s been inconsistent.

With that said, it’s too late to adjust. Our success will continue to ride on Knecht, ZZ, and Aidoo. And as another SEC coach commented two weeks ago, they want ZZ taking shots rather than making a play for others.

I say, look at the teams we lost too. MSST, USC, Texas A&M. These are physical defensive teams, that play with a slower tempo, and run good half court offense. Even then, we have still beat these teams, outside of MSST. These teams only beat us when they get the lead early, drain the clock, and force us to panic on offense. If we get the lead, these teams are going to struggle just as much to keep up.

Sure we lost to UK, Purdue, UNC, and Kansas. But neither were from defensive strategy as much as it was from prolific scoring from elite teams.

Also, It's easier said than done to stop us in the paint. Suck in too much and guys like Aidoo, DK, and JJJ will hit some jump shots from around the FT line. ZZ is usually able to weave in and out and find his teammates. Personally, I think MSST was a bad matchup becuase they do have the length to disrupt. ZZ was struggling to pass between players. Dalton was struggling to pull up and get as clean looks as he usually does becuase he was going up against 6'7 guards. Our bigs do have trouble against tall bigs and Tolu Smith is 6'11 and as elite as they come in college basketball.

So yes, there may be a blueprint for teams to beat us. But I think it takes a certain type of team execute that blueprint, and that team must be agressive in getting a lead early on.
Agree, and this is concerning. Aidoo struggles against physical post players and refuses to go strong to the rim.

In the games we’ve lost, Knecht isn’t able to finish (as often) through contact sonhisbshit is altered. Or, Knecht is double-teamed and our guards can’t hit a three. So then ZZ feels the pressure and begins pressing by attacking the rim with a challenging layup attempt.

Idk the answer, but we will face a physical team in the second round.

I'm not sure what we would adjust to besides having them ride the bench.

Aidoo is what he is. He can go in strong, but he doesn't have the strength and weight to bully people. You live with it becuase he has the finessee to shoot all around the hoop and the speed to run the length of the court.

I think the answer has to be to be agressive early and control the game from a lead. Easier said than done as the other team wants to do the same . But maybe try and get DK going early instead of reverting to him late. Id rather lose by him missing early on than hoping JJJ and Santi contribute offensively. Honestly, I'd consider benching those two if they are a no show in rd 1.

Who comes off the bench? Gainey isn’t shooting well. Dillione isn’t as good in defensive rotations. We are playing three on five most games. You could go with Awaka, Aidoo, Knecht, ZZ and ..(Gainey, Dillione, JJJ). There have been games when JJJ and Santi sat extended min in second half.

Neither is the SEC tourney for Pearls team who just beat the same team we got blown out by.

MSU was playing their 3rd game in 3 days. That was a huge advantage for Barn today. If they played the MSU team that showed up yesterday Pearl’s boys would have been destroyed.

Yeah and we beat Kentucky at Rupp after they went and blew out Auburn in Auburn. Those games were bigger and more important. This tournament is almost meaningless at this point

Absolutely love the narrative that Pearl never had any bad losses while he was here.
Pearl was coach when we had the worst collapse of all time in the NCAA tournament. We were up 17 with 15 minutes to go on 1 seed Ohio State in a sweet 16 game in 2007. We underachieved to begin with by being a 4 seed with all that talent. A big win could've erased the underperformance of the regular season. We never even made the SEC championship game with Pearl as head coach

Looks like Houston is having a melt down too!
Suppose it happens to the best. Not carrying water for our performance, but I think our guys were a little bit mentally spent in light of the gauntlet schedule they played to win the sec outright and wasn’t totally in it as we would have expected. That said…hope that was it.

Yes - That was three games where each game was for the SEC championship. Then asked them to do it again may have been a little much.

Also hopefully a wake up call.
