Jr looked stout until he had to pit. I think he will be fine Sunday as long as he keeps the fenders straight.

Yes, unless they go to a backup car. Jeff Gordon is going to his backup car which was the Bud Shootout car he wrecked last Saturday night.

Penske & Roush (freaking Ragan stayed near the front most of the day) cars look strong. I think Biffle had the best car in the first race before he got hung out late.

Ky. Busch & Stewart also looked pretty sporty. I know JJ won (thanks to staying out, and kudos for holding everyone off for a couple laps), but none of the HMS cars looked overly impressive today.

So, does he go to the back of the field automatically?

Yes, he will go to the back along with anyone else that goes to a backup car. It's not too important at Daytona if you have to start from the back. It might increase his chances of wrecking by being so close to Michael Waltrip though.

Mark Martin was pretty strong until he decided to drop out and make sure his car survived until the 500.
