Talking with people at lunch about this and they dropped some "truth" on me. They said the average car emits almost a pound of CO2 for every mile driven. That's crazy. And I googled it and it looks like that is true. Internet says a car emits something like 8888 grams of CO2 for a gallon of gas. 8888 grams is almost 20 pounds. So if the average is 22 miles to the gallon the math checks out.
This was changing my outlook on things. Then i looked up some more info. A gallon of gas weighs 6 pounds. Which makes sense, a gallon of water weighs about 10 pounds. And gas floats on water so its lighter.
So then i got confused. How does 6 pounds of gas equal 20 pounds of CO2? That would mean the gas is adding weight as burned.
This is actually what happens. You arent burning 20 pounds of CO2. You are burning 6 pounds of gasoline that has carbon in it.
Oxygen2 weighs about 3x as much as carbon, so when the 02 bonds with the carbon the weight does go up 3x.
So ok it's starting to check out again. But wait gasoline isnt just carbon. C8H18. Hydrogen doesnt weigh much at all. But all the H equals 18u while the carbon is 96u total. If you take that to 6 pounds total of gas and do the percentages its 5.1 pounds of carbon.
Which means they are multiplying by 4 instead of 3 to get their 20 pounds of C02. And I have no idea how they are doing their math. And keep in mind I kept the math simple, typically rounding down, to make it easier and actually worse environmentally.
I am going to do some more research just to talk it out at lunch with people. But I thought I would share.
Point being again you dont actually burn 20 pounds of CO2 like they say. It's something I believe they are using ignorance to cover up with their math on.
Yes. I went over that. They are rounding and adding in elements when they make their declarations.A gallon of gas weighs ~6.3 lbs. About 84% (~5.3 lbs) of gas by weight is carbon 12 (96/114). When burned, the carbon bonds with oxygen to form CO2, which is 3.67 times heavier than carbon 12 ((12 + 16 +16)/12). 5.3 * 3.67 = ~19.5 lbs.

yes I stated very clearly that I was and how I was.But you were rounding too...
All I did was the math for you. Is 19.5 lbs. significantly different than 20 lbs. in your mind?
How much C02 is in a gallon of gas?You can if the goal is to figure out how much CO2 is produced when burning a gallon of gas, which I though was what we were talking about...?

Considering they are rounding 19.5 up to 22.1whatever that car gas efficiency is, yes. I consider it different enough. Its somewhere around 1/7th of rounding, in their favor after they add in the weight of the oxygen molecules bound into the C02.
If I were to do any type of math that way except for factors of safety I would get in deep doodoo. Round like that to the IRS, serious fines. Round like that to my professional organization and I permanently lose my opprotunity to get licensed and maybe even get a job directly in my field. Round like that to a bank on a loan application and I am probably guilty of fraud.
But do that to make me scientific argument look better to the world I am shaming into change based on my psuedo math, and I get applauded.
How much C02 is in a gallon of gas?
I was thinking while doing the math why not throw in the scary fact that we consume what, half a pound of oxygen, in this? That's directly relatable to people and i would think as damaging as CO2. And doesnt rely on skirting the facts.

I started my research because I was told 1 pound of CO2 per mile. That's why I am bringing up both. It takes a considerable amount of rounding of the C02 to get it to be the same as the gas efficiency. You're conflating two different numbers now--pounds of CO2 produced per gallon and miles per gallon. You stated in your original post that if the average car got around 22 mpg it works out to about a pound of CO2 per mile (20/22).
None. The CO2 is produced in a chemical reaction, i.e., burning gas.
What facts does your intuition regarding the damaging effects of consuming oxygen in the atmosphere rely upon?

There being no CO2 is the point of this whole discussion. They are throwing in a whole lot of oxygen to make things worse.
Regular whoppers can make a man grow breasts too if eaten in sufficient quantityDOCTOR: Burger King’s ‘Impossible Burger’ Has 18 Million Times More Estrogen Than Regular Whopper
Finally, the doctor explains the radically high amount of estrogen featured in each burger.
“The impossible whopper has 44 mg of estrogen and the whopper has 2.5 ng of estrogen,” wrote Strangle. “That means an impossible whopper has 18 million times as much estrogen as a regular whopper.”
He went on to compare the level of estrogen in the Impossible Burger to soy milk, writing that eating four of the vegetable burgers daily would result in a human male growing breasts:
Just six glasses of soy milk per day has enough estrogen to grow boobs on a male. That’s the equivalent of eating four impossible whoppers per day. You would have to eat 880 pounds of beef from an implanted steer to equal the amount of estrogen in one birth control pill.
In short, the Impossible Burger is a genetically modified organism filled with calorie-dense oils that can make a man grow breasts if eaten in sufficient quantity.
