Ok guys.... Here is the way I see it.... All the cloak and dagger BS is really making my head hurt (just took 4 more ibuprofen). It is really hard to figure out who or what to believe in this mess!
I can say that the vast majority of the sport's media members in K-town have no idea what the heck is going on save for the tidbits of information they are being spoon fed by the Athletic Department. And the source(s) that almost each one of them quotes is "a person close to the situation within the Athletic Department who does not have the authority to speak for the Athletic Department who has requested to remain anonymous".
Really the only Knoxville sports media person who quoted an actual source was Woodbery when he quoted LaMonte. And Woodbery has confirmed that he actually spoke to LaMonte. Now why LaMonte choose to contact Woodbery of all people is a mystery in and of itself.
On the other hand, we have a very reputable writer in Chatt who releases an article about the Gruden deal (thank you Hargis) which was a front page story relying upon two sources that the editor of the paper checked out. Hargis then proceeded to back up his story on a number of radio programs throughout Tennessee. Knoxville's sport's media (other than TB and some of his crew) chose not to investigate the story rather they ridiculed Hargis and attacked his credibilty. Frankly, I tend to believe Hargis' account more than the garbage that Hubbs, Deardork, Hyams, Pennington, and Rucker (you can insert the remainder of 990 sports people here) have been spewing from their "sources" (see above).
The whole deal is laughable and is really becoming a PR nightmare of avalanche proportions. If Gruden does not land at UT as the next HC of the Vols then I would say that it is because of one of two reasons!
Either Hart blew the deal for which he must answer or when push came to shove Gruden did not want to return to college football. If it was Hart, then hopefully he will suffer the consequences. If it was Gruden, then he is kind of an arsss for getting the VolNation's hopes up: Who knows.
But as much as I hate to admit it, the truth may be somewhere in the middle. We may never know the truth of what has actually taken place. This being said, if Gruden is not hired then unfortunately none of the other candidates that have been mentioned are noteworthy - Fedora, Strong, Gundy, Fisher - nope sorry - no chill bumps - maybe some cringes though. It is unfortunate that Tennessee may not make the splash-home-run hire that we were sooo hoping for.
I am still hoping that UT gets it right! Gruden Gruden Gruden!!!!!
