Official Jon Gruden Thread XV

From what I'm hearing, Gruden appears to be the only one who is throwing a complete package at the Vols. By that, I mean Coordinators. Strong would need a good OC, Fedora and Fisher would need a good DC. Gundy looks like he'd need both. Anyway, sounded like Gruden had his stuff together and nobody else is going to stack up against him. JMO

I'm not a Glock fan.....just personal preference. 9mm is a good choice though. Ammo is inexpensive (comparitively) and there is a wide choice of loads these days. If you like the Glock, and are comfortable with its operation, its a solid choice.

The fairly new Bersa BP9CC is a great carry gun. Google the reviews on it and you'll find universal praise. Priced much lower than Glock - but right on par in quality.

I'll duck now while the Glockers take shots at me, lol.

This is my first post to any forum or chat room or whatever so it's going to be long. Sorry.

I don't know what you all consider a "source",but I believe that the proverbial "smokescreen" is an accurate theory based on a phone conversation with a brother-in-law to a former Vols HC(married to the coach's sister. Not named Kiffin or Dooly!

This man was salesman for a company where i was employed for 6 years. I built a good relationship with him, even to the point of him offering to pay for a college education if i would go back to finish. I say that only show a level of trust and familiarity with one another. Here's how the conversation went after 15 minutes of asking about he and his wife's health and so on.

Me: So what are we to do with our Mighty Vols? We're sinking here.
Him: We have to get a man that will bring top talent. We're losing in state players to our main rivals.
-another line or two concerning talent between us.

Me: What in the world are going to do for a coach?
Him: Well it ain't going to a good one but we'll hear no later than next Mon. Hart is in NY right now at the conference but should be end of this week or next Mon.
Me: I don't see good talent coming without a good one. It is shame we let Gruden fall through like we did.

Him: Uh...yeah...i....i hate to...i can't...I would hate for you to quote me.
Me: Oh....ok.
Him: Buddy boy it was great hearing from you got to go.

That being said I'll tell you this man is never at a loss for words. Unless he's frustrated or nervous or mad. I believe i caught him of guard and he bottled. The call was over less than a minute after the question.

My opinion is that if he knew anything about a coach(not a good one) he would have elaborated if there were no swirling controversy. Furthermore, if the Gruden deal fell through cleanly he would have confirmed whatever story was put out there!

as i said this man is a brother-in-law to former Vols HC and he played football there circa 1970. He knows. SMOKESCREEN!!!!

Go Vols! Great first post!

I would love to look like a complete idiot for questioning Hart's ability to hire someone fantastic. From this side of the fence, it is not looking good. Prove me wrong, Hart...puh lease prove me wrong

I'm with you. I would love to be proven wrong by Hart. Unlike others, I don't really hold his background against him. I view every new job as a challenge as I am sure he does. Any competitive person does.

My concern is that he has such little experience in this domain, and he is running with the big dogs now.

I question his ability to make the sell and close the deal.

I'd just like to add that I swung by the Gruden residence in Tampa on Saturday... No tan Yukon with Bucs trailer hitch cover. Sorry guys...

A former Buc player (and Gruden neighbor) I spoke with at the clubhouse would neither confirm nor deny the rumor of Gruden to UT... but he did have a smirk on his face when I asked him.

here's the way I look at it:

- Gruden is or was definitely in the running without a doubt

- Regardless of whether we get Gruden or not, we (UT) had to interview other candidates (which they are as seen in the press, etc.)

- Nothing seems to be adding up on ANY of the news for any of the coaches and Gruden's rep along with other reports not only killed the Gruden talk in the press but really shut it down and removed his name from the list of most as a possibility (around the same time)

- Word is we would have to pay a lot for Gruden and his staff... but also word is we'd have to pay a lot for the others due to buyouts, etc. so I don't think money is the issue either way

- Repeat: Nothing seems to be adding up on ANY of the news (this is why I still have hope... it's not as much as before but it's still there)

what's going to happen?

Well of course not...after the hit on the kid that took the pic, they had to run it to the local chop shop for a refit...

Welcome to the borad and thanks for sharing!

Have any of the OGs brought updated info since yesterday morning?

I wish we still had a Gruden cliff notes thread...

You should print some flyers offering up free window washing services in Knoxville. Walk up and ring the doorbell, hand it to them and see if they take you up on it.

I will have to say that if (yes that is a big if :) ) JG somehow ends up here, the powers that be's ability to get everyone off the scent should be a text book case for how to play the media.

Of course it helps when you know that everyone involved is going to lie, and even better, everyone else expects you to lie. That way even when someone is telling the truth, no one knows.

It certainly helps to have the most inept journalism for a city the size of Knoxville.

Hart never had to worry about them trying to break anything.

Breathe and relax. When Gruden is announced as our coach he will come to the podium with his new staff in hand and a target list of recruits they are going to get. Gruden is a workaholic and he is taking his time getting everything together and he will hit the ground running. Why keep a lid on things? Well you have two other prominent SEC schools looking for head coaches and other schools looking to fill key coaching positions. The quieter things are kept the less likelihood of there being a bidding war for each coach.

Relax and enjoy the ride.
