Official Nashville Predators Thread

Happens every year. Pekka can’t up his game in the playoffs from what he did in the regular season. (The last 5 years)

I’m not hating, just an observation.
Really? I just thought one of those goals (the 3rd one, where he allowed the huge rebound) was on him. And Pekka is the reason they won Games 2 and 3. Your general point about him having stinkers in the playoffs is correct, but I don't think it applies to last night's game. If you want to rag someone this series, do Ekholm. He not only has taken several bad penalties, but he's looked out of position a lot too. That interference penalty he picked up early in Game 2 was one of the dumbest penalties I've ever seen, and then he got the unsportsmanlike on top of it.

I've never quite understood this team all year, which is why I've been saying all year I don't expect them to make a deep playoff run. It's like they check out for periods of time and end up in situations where their backs are against the wall (either in a single game, or over a period of multiple games), then bow up and get themselves out of that bad position, then soon after check out again. Teams that go far in the playoffs have a much more consistent level of focus. I get that there's ebb and flow, but when the Preds have been off this year they are really, really, really off.

Also, can anybody enlighten me at an Xs and Os level exactly why the PP is so bad? I just know that it's bad, but can't put my finger on precisely why.

Too much passing, not enough shooting. Gotta throw the puck towards the net more and things will happen. That first PP the Preds got like 1 shot off

The thing is that occasionally they do shoot more on the PP, but nothing gets through. I've been saying "shoot more" all year and once in a blue moon they do that, but everything gets blocked.

They aren't moving the puck north and south enough, passing laterally doesn't do much to create gaps for a higher percentage shot. Think of basketball, going to the paint and kicking back out for an open 3 when the defense reacts to the ball.

You can pass back and forth on top of the circles all day and get room for a shot, but you aren't causing defensive structure to deteriorate when you do that.

I agree with the two comments you’ve already gotten about shooting more and more north/south movement; but also, the Preds are awful about getting set up. They have trouble entering the zone and gaining control. When they dump and chase they seem to lose quite a few of those battles in the corner and when they try to skate it in they can’t beat the pressure and get set up. Teams know we are struggling and they are putting on a lot of on puck pressure making it hard to get set up. If it was one single thing they were doing wrong then it’s an eas fix. The problem is it’s a combination of the previous two comments above plus this.

The play seemed to drop off when Housley left for defense and special teams. Would love to see him come back to the staff in some capacity if he doesn’t find another head coaching gig this offseason.

Interesting line up changes today if the practice lines from yesterday are what Lavy goes with tonight:

1st - JOFA (unchanged of course)
2nd - Granlund - Sissons - Jarnkrok
3rd - Watson - Bonino - Smith
4th - Boyle - Turris - Guadreau/Solomaki/Grimaldi

4th line will depend on who they go with. Grimaldi didn’t practice and was given a maintanence day. Boyle will have to see if he can play. I think the Turris move is a long time coming. He just hasn’t played well all year and has maintained that bad play into the playoffs. Not sure about Smith being on the 3rd line but I do partly agree with that. I like Sissons on the 2nd line center. He is consistent at least.

Big game today. Can’t afford to go down 3-2 going back to Dallas. Let’s hope we get the good version of the Preds tonight and not Dr. Jekyll

Awful in our own end. Can’t get it out of our zone to save our lives. Careless, no urgency, and non aggressive. Disappointing.
