Official: UT hires Kim Caldwell as the new coach for Lady Vols basketball

Yes, Jon was the post coach though. Says at least a little that we didn’t successfully recruit a single SEC caliber true center while he was working with the bigs.

Blaming an assistant coach for failure is not getting the point. ALL of it - the good and bad - goes back to the head coach.

And blaming the wrong assistant, esp when you know it's the wrong one, is just untruthful. It's been stated dozens of times that Joy coached the true posts and Jon coached the wings more. Though both Jon and Joy coached both at times.

Right. Was a bad recruiter, esp out of high school. It’s one of the main reasons she doesn’t work here anymore. Is this new?

Joy also coached posts, esp the 5s and Jon worked a lot w Sara and Rickea.

Are the grave dancers legs literally going to have to fall off their bodies before it’s enough?
Not dancing on anyone's grave. I like Kellie very much and hoped beyond hope she would succeed. I supported and defended her through five years, as I said I would for all of those years. I could have maybe supported one more year, but ultimately think that would have not made a difference. She's a good coach, but not an elite one. I'm not trying to attack her, just giving my opinion.

We shall not rest until the public flailing and stoning happens!!!!! Anything less is accepting mediocrity…..
I'm trying to talk the truth as I see it. Not trying to flog or stone anyone. And I don't think Kellie is mediocre. After all, her teams finished third almost every year in the 14 team SEC, so she is definitely a better P5 coach than most. I have no animus towards her or the her hiring process, like so many on here. But I don't understand the constant attacks on the assistant coaches. Maybe they were not good, but if so that's still the head coaches fault in not replacing them with better assistants. Every head coach is responsible for everything that happens in her program. Period. That's all I'm trying to say.

I don't think the response about grave dancing was in response to you. Didn't mean it to be. The real gravedancers know who they are.

Didn’t say she said it as the LV head coach. It’s the style she’s always used and she said she’s playing the same at UT. That’s all I’m going by. She said before the Sun Belt final that her target time for a player to be on the floor was 90 seconds. She said that is every player, including the starters.

She only had 3 regulars average over 21 min/game. One with 28. One with 26. And one with 24. That’s it.

Just watch the Sun Belt final. It’s on the espn app. It was the biggest game of their season, so I assume she played it exactly like she wanted. 3 players subbed out 30 sec in. Then 5 for 5 a minute later and 5 for 5 again less than 2 min after that. All 5 starters were subbed out at least twice in less than 5 minutes. She made 41 substitutions (82 if you’re counting in and out) in the 1st quarter alone, including 4 times subbing 5 in - 5 out and 3 times 4 in - 4 out.

I’m hoping she is willing to make adjustments because I would love to see major recruits wearing orange, especially if NIL has been solved. But no amount of money will get a top 25 player to play in a system that subs everyone out twice in the first 5 min. They can get the same money elsewhere, play in rhythm and get 34 min/game.

That’s all I’m saying. Well, that, and you can’t press top teams. Va Tech proved that. Maybe watch that 92-49 game, too. They passed over and through the press all game. And it’s why you don’t see a press in pro ball and only in P5 when you want to surprise a team. Good players make a press look silly. Now that’s all I’m saying.
Watch West Virginia this year!!! They pressed teams. How about VS at Rutgers back in the day!!!

Guessing it’s because they aren’t sure she’ll be back. Doesn’t sound like KC is willing to alter her style and top players aren’t signing up to play in 90 second spurts. Not saying she won’t be successful but it’ll be with gritty 2 and 3 star type players. Rickea Jackson isn’t playing that style and sitting half of every game.
It’s team first… and CKC is getting 5 stars not players going to Mississippi State or Ole Miss, or Vandy!

Interesting that the recruiter swap btw Coach Sam and Coach Lazo is working out really well for both. While not yet hauling in a bunch of 5 stars, Miss St is having their best recruiting year in ages.

1000%. A handful of these SEC players have already taken Ls against Mia and Mya Pauldo on the high school level.

Coach Caldwell recruiting has been elite! Lead assistant coaches Coach Tubner and Coach Lazo recruiting has been elite.
In 7 months this staff has beat out UCONN, Baylor, Kentucky, Florida State, NC State, North Carolina, and South Carolina plus others for elite talent.
The first month on the job they beat out LSU for Ruby Whitehorn.
Guess they don’t have to worried about their targets being told where to sign. It’s a new era.
GBO!

With CKC, we need to judge her in steps:
-1- Win the press conference tomorrow. Not hard, just set realistic short-term goals and broad long-term expectations, try not to look like a child that just pulled a golden ticket out of a chocolate bar.
-2- Introduce your staff - need to have some bonafides on it
-3- Turn on the NIL machine and get 4-5 SEC quality players out of the portal (Danny had better have this lined up for her, because there's no way she should be expected to fundraise the big donors right out of the gate.)
-4- Set a realistic OOC schedule, this team will need to build some confidence.
-5- Improve each year and be at an E8 / Top 3 SEC level program by year 3.

We get to see #1 - #4 before the end of Summer. It's gonna be interesting.

Past due for a checkup... umm, she's crushed #1-4. Even crushing HS recruiting in a way I couldn't have imagined 7 months ago.
