Is it just me? Calipari going to kentucky just doesn't seem like that big a deal. His arrogance and kentucky's arrogance deserve each other. A match made in heaven, until john doesn't live up to their ridiculous expectations. Pearl has held his own against john's teams, even this year we should have won that game.

its just u. cal is a great coach.

Pearl can, for some reason, outcoach Cal at times...but next year KY is going to have some ridiculous talent, and we aren't. Ya their 2-2 against each other, but would you bet against KY in that matchup if those MEM recruits commit to KY?

They had some ridiculous talent last year when we went to Memphis and beat them to take away their number 1 ranking.

Cool - how far did their team go in the NCAAT and how far did ours go? We won 1/1 that year but if we had played 5 I wouldn't have been surprised to see us lose 4.

yea right. It's not like we beat them with a buzzer beater or something. We just outplayed them down there. And yea, they went farther than us in the tourney the previous year too and we beat their ass then as well. It's not like Calipari is going to recruit better at UK than he did at Memphis because he was already outrecruiting everybody. Now, he will have to deal with a rabid fan base and much stiffer conference competition. I think his hiring is good for the league, and I'm not scared that we won't be able to compete with them.

It was a last possession game - not much difference in that and a buzzer beater. Tyler Smith made the shot and then they missed on their last attempt and fouled.

Keep pretending he won't win big at UK - I would like to believe they'll continue sucking as much as anyone. And a much stiffer conference competition? Not so much the past two years sadly. Yeah - he has to deal with the pathetic crap that is the UK fan base - so we can always hope he doesn't get in turned around in 2 years like CBG and gets fired as well.

Cal didn't win CUSA until UofL, Cincy, and Marquette left.

Like Bruce says, in the SEC: we don't play Southern Miss, we play Ole Miss; we don't play Central Florida, we play Florida.....

That's fine, but let me just ask this: how do you think this year's Tiger squad would have fared in the SEC? How do you think any of his last 4 would have done?

I don't think the guy is a god. I do think, however, that he will remake UK back into the power in the conference almost immediately. He isn't going to win 5 dozen conference games in a row, but I would be willing to bet that you won't see UT teams as weak as this one winning the east again any time soon. He is going to be fielding teams that are capable of making it deep into the NCAA tournament on a regular basis, and if the other teams in the conference can't put that kind of product on the floor, they will be playing for second.

This is a high-powered hire at a high-powered program. That should be concerning to UT fans.

I agree with your entire post. But, I don't think Cal is the automatic grand slam many people seem to think he is. The SEC will not provide him with a bye into a 1 or 2 seed every year.

I think he will do well, but I don't see him having much better teams than he did at Memphis, which means he will lose more in a real conference. But I fully expect them to be good, but not just unbelievable.

The fact that the KY fans think Calipari will instantly transform them into 1996-98 all over again will not help his cause.

You sure about that first part?

You'll have to check me, but I am pretty sure he won it in 02 or 03, those three teams didn't leave until 05.

I was wrong. He did win it once. But you may notice he didn't start winning it convincingly until all the good teams left. Hell, the year before they left they had 15 losses.

He won it once. With an astounding record of 22-8

CUSA was a better conference then, too.

I was just making sure we were giving credit where it's due.

I just looked it up, were Louisville, Marquette and Cincy all in the division with Memphis when Memphis won their division twice? Or did Memphis move to the East after they left?

Who cares if he wasn't as successful (compared to what he did this past few years) when those teams were in his conference? He still managed to have a lot of success in the NCAAT when they weren't in the conference. I would take a couple of Final Fours if it meant beating up on a bunch of bad teams in the conference schedule. You still gotta beat the best to get there.

nm, they had to be in a different division than Cincy at least, because Cincy won the conference outright in 01-02

I remember that year, that was the worst team Memphis had during his tenure. However, that is a lot of prestige leaving the conference at once, I would expect them to start winning the conference convincingly after they all left.

They had 15 losses his first year, and 16 losses in 04-05

He finished in a 5-way tie for the overall conference title in 2004, which was the first season without divisions. And, UofL, Cincy, and Marquette were all in a different division than Memphis before that.

I'm not suggesting Cal won't turn KY back into a power - he will. I'm just saying that I don't think we're going to get blasted into the Stone Ages of the '90s either.
