Ohio St. Strength Coach Lays Out Fan..Lawsuit?

Nice Rock Bottom, but I'm disappointed it wasn't followed up with the People's Elbow...

As for the severity of the take down and any potential legal recourse, I just don't see it, and allowing it would set a very bad precedent. If I were a player, I would love when some idiot runs on the field because I would see them as a cross between a tackling dummy and a rock'em sock'em robot - see if I can hit them hard enough their head pops off.

The idiot was trespassing. If you get injured while committing a crime, that's life.

Maybe not in the eyes of the law..

I'm no lawyer but I've heard horror stories of a burglar falling in a hole / slipping and falling on a knife or something.

Turned around and sued.

May be just that, horror stories, but I wouldn't be surprised if they turned out to be true.

I doubt a lawsuit in Ohio would come to much. Illinois would be a total different ballgame.

I'm sure the school will be sued. You can sue for pretty much anything these days. I doubt the kid wins though.

Saw a guy get tazed at Cardinals' game a few years ago for running onto the field. The crowd cheered like the home team cranking a 3-run jack. I was pretty funny (except for the guy that got tazed)

Many cities with big stadiums have specific ordinances that make running into the field during a sporting event a specific crime. You probably won't do 25-to-life for it, but they can pop you a decent fine. Maybe they told the guy if he wines about getting slammed, he gets charged.

Excessive force.

Pot stirrer imo.

But if you're not saying that just to see what happens, the force was sufficient to take down a man who could be posing as fan but had other ill intentions.

You are wrong. Correct and adequate force. Maybe he really needed a toe kick in the solar plexus while he was down also. But by that time the strength coach was already making a judgement on if more ass whooping was necessary.

That stuff happens in California. This is why you don't let him live and tell cops you felt threatened for your life.

You are correct. There are certain circumstances where the home/landowner can be held responsible for the injuries of a trespassers.

You don't know what the dude was going to do though. He may have had a gun or a knife and attacked opposing players and coaches. The dude had no business being on the field and he deserved every bit of what he got. Are you saying a security guard could be sued as well? It's not like they're cops and anyone can hire security. Why do you believe security guards should be allowed to prevent a potential threat like the coach did but the coach is held liable? I could go out and hire a security guard tomorrow to protect me. So... he can tackle a potential threat to me and I can't? Or...

Security guards are there to provide security. Football coaches are not. In all likelihood the guy wouldn't be able to recover much given that he was illegally trespassing and created the situation that lead to his injury. It was pretty obvious that the guy was going to be forcefully removed. But the coach probably should have left it to the people paid to do stuff like this.

Any time a visor wearing douchenozzle gets forcibly removed from the surface of the earth only to be forcibly replaced into the surface of the earth I can ignore my sad life and crack the faintest of smiles.

In what way are they trying to "save face"? The only person who did wrong here is the idiot, and he's the one being punished. Seems completely appropriate.

Considering what Ohio State football players, or any D1 football player for that matter, can get away with without losing a scholarship, I think this punishment is absurd.

Athletes who do wrong should not get off easy. But that doesn't diminish the need for punishment in this instance.
