I like the idea of pressing early on to see how OSU responds. If that doesn't work, play a heavy dose of 2-3 zone. Just my two cents.

Start out the game with a full course press and use it as long as it is effective. Mix up man to man defense with match up 2/3 zone and i think it will be effective enough for us to win.

He's annoyingly inconsistent. Nobody has really mentioned our second scorer (Bufford) in threads on here - which is interesting. Looks to me like even if you can cover two of our scorers then the other two will have lesser defenders on them. Yet everybody "loves the matchup". Just an observation.

Ohio State is very difficult to defend. That's why they've won as many games as they have in a tough conference. They are unselfish, can penetrate & finish inside, score midrange or shoot outside very well. Not to mention pretty balanced scoring with four averaging in double figures. This will not be easy. They also are at their best with an up-tempo game. Will be an interesting game.

Good thing we play great defense then...

what about maybe a 1-3-1 zone.... much tougher to shoot against

What about more of a 3-2 zone to guard against the 3 ball, the wings will be able to help with penetration and considering they run a 4 guard offense, Chism and Williams should be ok down low rebounding and defending?

Who's chasing to the corner because if they're on Buford and Diebler will kill a team with corner threes.

Honestly, I don't think Tennessee should try to do anything special or play a junk defense. If it doesn't work the game can get ugly. I'd come out and do what you've done well all year. It's a great matchup and should be a good game.

Yep. My friends(also OSU fans) and I will agree with that. Most frustrating player on the team until recently.

I'm not sure if it's you or other OSU fans on here, but you make it sound like you can exploit any defense thrown your way, as every scheme has its faults, I've read, that if UT goes man to man your 4 guards will be an impossible matchup, if we play any type of zone OSU won't have any problems finding the soft spots and knocking down 3's....so my question is how are you not undefeated in Evan Turner played games if you are that good? What happened in those losses, what did your opponents do that gave you fits?

We got beat three times when we've had Turner. Not wanting to make excuses, so I'll just leave it at that. :)

I know you did, and I wasn't talking trash, I was just curious as to what those 3 teams did to throw OSU off, so I kinda know what to look for as the flow of the game progresses if UT is in trouble or OSU is in trouble ya know?

UNC played very well and their bigs had big games. UNC in November is not the same as the team was later in the season. Minnesota got hot outside and rode the crowd to a big win. They didn't seem to miss anything. Purdue got us down early and held on. Johnson had a huge game.

I'm not saying Ohio State can exploit any defense Tennessee throws out there. I'm saying that if Tennessee just does what Tennessee does well it will be a hell of a game. The problem with junk defenses is that you put them in for a game and if assignments are missed you can blame a loss squarely on the junk defense.

There are going to be mismatches at both ends of the court if both teams go with their normal rotations. This game will be won on the defensive end IMO.

Cheers.

Off shooting. The UNC game was played in Madison Square Garden and we really had issues in both games there (we beat Cal the next day in a little tournament).
The game at Minnesota we just got beat and they had a dude score 27 points, including 7 of 9 from 3.
The game at WVU game we blew a huge half time lead and just couldn't get back into rhythm.
The game against Purdue we lost the first half shooting was bad and dug a hole we couldn't climb out of...down 11 or so at half I think and ended up losing by 2.

I guess we lost four games with Turner. The common thread is shots not going down in all of them. We can get ice cold and go 5+ minutes without a basket. Not going to be naive and say its luck, as those teams can play good defense.

I think after the Purdue loss we've started to cut to the hoop more so we don't get reliant on jumpshots that for whatever reason don't drop. At the beginning of the year we relied way too much on shooting and now are more balanced with driving and shooting.

Thanks for the info, UT has had to play a multitude of defenses this year, due to the suspensions, and having to face Jon wall and Demarcus Cousins who are near impossible matchups. Pearl prefers to play man to man and is against zone, but has implemented zone effectively at times this year, granted not against teams with a 4 guard offense. There's no doubting that OSU is a tough matchup, it will be interesting to see what CBP comes up with, just hope the Vols can exploit their mismatches on the offense end. Think OSU will come out in zone or man to man?

I thought we had abandoned zone, but we came out with it against Tech with good results. We are comfortable in both, so whichever one has given UT more issues this years is what I'd assume we use primarily (I haven't watched Tenn enough to know what their weakness is, so I won't attempt to talk out of my ass).

I think we'll open in a zone. No offense, but your outside shooting statistics aren't all that great so I think Matta will clog the lane to force the outside shot and protect Lauderdale. I could be wrong but that's the way I see it.

Yeah I figured that much and it makes sense, I just didn't know if you guys pressed or harrassed ball handlers with your 4 guard attack

I think that the Buckeyes will press early in the game to dictate tempo. Pearl is a great defensive mind and will give us our most difficult game in quite some time. Much respect for this man.
