westwords For some reason, defensive coordinator Tim Banks didn’t send safety support to the corners. Will Howard hit the Vols with 24 completions in 29 attempts for 311 yards. Freshman Jeremiah Smith made six catches for 103 and two TDs. He was exhibit A of open house. Tight ends and running backs caught a lot of passes. Linebackers were sometimes in the area. As Marvin West told me---"On to Basketball"... 1734963273705.png

I didn't see anything good coming from going up there in mid December with the way Tennessee plays road games.. Vol fans and players it seems gassed themselves up for that letdown..We never had a chance, and even less of one once all the skill guys were watching from the sidelines..

That's right Mr. West. Tim Banks defended just like he did vs uga. 90% completions!! Guys, READ this article. Then comment. Marvin looks at everything.

Others said three weeks to prepare but there was nothing new on offense or defense … Ohio State simple motion and misdirections caused confusionVol weaknesses were exposed … somebody recalled one play James Pearce made (he had three tackles) … Tennessee’s highly regarded defensive front didn’t make much impact … official stats said quarterback Howard was twice hurried … Nico was sacked four times … biggest play for the Vol attack was Payton Lewis’ 26-yard run against fourth-quarter substitutes. LAZY? I mean really. 3 weeks and not prepared for intangibles? Nothing... What exactly did they "work" on? I'm saying either Incompetence, Laziness, or both..... Stop playing video games with the players.....

We saw it all year. Front 4 don't get home Tim had nothing for you. Wonder what he was doing with all that time in the booth?.. I'll say this.. Josh Heupel's coaching staff is lacking in several key areas. Matching wits with opposing coaches with similar talent is one of them.

Fact. Good to see some Vol Fans are able to see deficiencies.

I don't come here to pump sunshine. It's obvious. I do give them credit getting to 10-2 though. That was a feat with the offense looking like it did most of the year. We benefitted from a favorable schedule and got two of our big rivals at home. Won't be that way next year..

You can say we "benefited from a favorable schedule" but that really is just based on Oklahoma being uncharacteristically mediocre.

In most years, a road win over Oklahoma will not be easy .... it wasn't easy for Alabama even this year.

.... and does the mood of this place have to be so sour all the time? Even on Christmas Eve? It's weird how down in the dumps some of you always are.

If following Tennessee's sports teams makes you miserable, maybe you should do something else? Just a thought.

I was speaking to the mood of the entire football forum .... not just you or even your buddy in this thread.

Nobody wants to look at the big picture. Based on where this program was in December of 2020, and the future that Tennessee football appeared to be facing :

1) A 20-27 record from 2017-2020.
2) A roster depleted by transfers and a vacant Class of 2021 from de-commitments.
3) Looking for a new Athletic Director.
4) ^ Who would have to hire a new head coach. ^
5) Under an NCAA investigation into multiple Level 1 violations committed under the recently fired staff.
6) ^ Which UT's Chancellor had publicly admitted occurred. ^

^ Is going from this ^ .... to the current state of affairs in just 4 years really so bad????

Some people in this forum sound like they should be on suicide alert. It is very weird, indeed.

It's all good. No one is disputing what he's done in 4 years. Been really good. I think the mood would be different if Vols hadn't went up there and laid a egg..That was a bad look, in prime time when all eyes were on you. Hopefully they learn from it and getting to this playoff becomes more regular. Hopefully with a better showing..

I’m sure most of us are quite aware that we are way better off now than a few years ago, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still have a realistic concern about the obvious deficiencies of this team. I am very appreciative of where we are, but also concerned for our future if some things don’t change. We do not have an easy schedule next year. Some of us are all doom and gloom, some are all rainbows and butterflies, but I think most of us are somewhere in the middle.

In 1997 we got shellacked by Nebraska. There were also huge concerns at the end of that year considering we were losing:
Peyton Manning
Marcus Nash
Trey Teague
Johnathon Brown
Leonard Little
Terry Fair

We’ll just have to wait until next year. I think Josh is a competent (at the very least) coach and we now have elite administration imo. The demographics of the state of Tennessee are also in our favor with improving talent. I just don’t see any reason for pessimism even if next year doesn’t turn out to be great.

OSU did to us what we did to most teams in 2022. They schemed the mismatch all night. We had zero answers for this. Tallent deficient on display for the world to see. That OSU teams beats us at Neyland.
this^ on offense OSU had us at every position (NFL guys everywhere) except Center & since D Sampson was a no show due to a hammy. I'm still hoping for Nico that he finally gets the game to slow down and be that NIL Millionaire player. Meanwhile younger QBs in the SEC Lanorris Sellars & DJ Lagway have passed him. I don't believe this offense with the players were able to implement new dynamic plays they could execute and the coaches that are with them every day either know that or should. If you put new plays in and the execution is not there or jumping offsides because players are confused can rear its ugly head. Then fans say why are they adding new plays at this time of the year the players can't execute the plays they got without leading the league in penalties. After looking back on the year, I think we got fortunate on the schedule Oklahoma being bad and somehow getting a W @ home in OT v UF and a close W vs Bama. The Arky loss was a dud, but 10 wins is actually good, as bad as the offense was no dynamic receivers, either because of nagging yearlong injuries or they are subpar and the QB not playing up to what ppl were expecting, in retrospect 10 wins was good for this roster.

10 wins was good....But no one can deny that we had a easy schedule and outside of Texas and UGA the SEC was $hitty this year...What if OU...FL....Bama were their teams of old? USC and FL improved as the season went on....Tennessee flat lined and even regressed as the season went on....That's concerning no matter what day it is.

Right. At UF, at bama, chalk them up and start figuring from 0-2.

I disagree that it was an easy schedule relative to what most teams play ..... and you can play that "what if" crap until the cows come home. Outside of Arkansas, Tennessee took care of business.

Once again, nobody sees the bigger picture here.

I don't perceive this to be true at all on the football forum of VolNation ..... although, I don't believe that this forum is a good reflection of Tennessee's fan base as a whole.

Yeah we saw it.....Against UGA and OSU. We are light-years from being in the top dogs discussion.
