OU is a very good team and is likely to win. But their first two opponents were in the lower tier of CUSA last year with a combined 7-17 record. Both ECU and N Texas beat Tulsa worse than OU did last year.
LT was 4-8 last year. They beat an FCS team. The combined win total of the 3 FBS teams they beat was 4... as in 4-32.
Again, OU is a very good team but be careful gauging how good on the first two teams they've beaten this year. UT was tested by much better mid-majors in USU and ASU.
Hard to read the early season OOC games and draw comparisons without common opponents. The first half performances against LaTech and Tulsa were exceptional. LaTech had 25 yards of offense at the half, Tulsa had 90. Our offense was well over 300 in each. Stoops usually goes vanilla in the second half of early games, and frankly, I was glad Tulsa score didn't end up 52-21 like last year.
What I can tell you is this OU squad has opened up stronger against lower level competition than any OU team since 2008 and 2003. The strengths of this team are the OL and DL, two-deep starters at most positions and a bunch of potential AA's and first-team all-conference guys with size and speed on both sides of the ball. There's a different pace and finish with these guys so far, Knight is now 8-0 as a starter and is getting better with each game, we have a running attack which we haven't seen since DeMarco Murray, and the defense has fully implemented Mike Stoops' 3-4 defense after running it for a last year and through 2 games this year.
The key, I think, will be in the trenches - can your young and very talented linemen hold their own against our bigs on each side of the ball. If you do, and force 3 and outs, turnovers, and on offense are able to get a good push, it'll be a close, good ballgame. If you give Knight time, he'll make a throw or scramble (best running QB we've had since the wishbone days). If your OL can't protect, our DL will get to your QB in a big way. Let's hope its a clean, injury-free game, and everyone has a great time.
