Oklahoma coach confirms suspicion about why Tennessee offense wasn't as explosive

"The win wasn't necessarily pretty for the Vols, but it might've been Heupel's best in-game performance as a head coach since taking over at Tennessee in early 2021."

This is the closing sentence from the column, and is 100% true. All the complainers that say we somehow fell short because we didn't run up the score need to see this and get a clue.
If UT had kept its foot on the gas 2 things could have happened, IMO
UT could have aired it out and scored multiple TDs and won big if everything clicked
OR
Without 2 starting OTs there could have been sacks, more ball strips, QB injured and picks and who knows a pick 6 like NC State game.
I thought with a 19 to 3 lead Heupel did the right thing, I just didn't think he had it in him, but the situation backed him into a corner. There are more tough games coming, and we need everyone healthy. If you win by double digits 10+ on the road in the SEC you are doing your job. The game was never in doubt.

Excellent points. Not everyone will understand them though. Don’t you know it’s a failure if we don’t ring up 50 on everybody?

They definitely had our offense baffled early…that first long TD pass came when we went to a different formation and has 8 blockers to give Nico time…their corner was without safety help so the route was just perfect…of course when we tried that a time or two later the corner had safety help…it was a chess match between the coaches

OU's coaches need to confirm all those obviously fake "injuries" as well.
I haven't seen such pitiful acting since Steven Seagal.
What a terrible take Ed. Steven is a true artist in every sense and I hope your posts have been under siege since this ridiculousness. You're hard to kill though as I've seen several posters try to take you down only to fail miserably. This is all figuratively speaking of course as I don't condone any poster on poster violence. No one is above the law, even if they are out for justice. I know, you forgot the blue font.

They did a good job slowing us down. CJH adjusted, realized no need to take unnecessary risks on offense, 10 point SEC road win. Nice!

True, but the Vols won't face an inept offense when they play Bubba and UGA either......

Vols punted the ball 8 times. Wow, imagine if just 2 or 3 of those 8 drives resulted in points? Oklahoma would not have been in the game at all. They were in the game in the 4th quarter and that part was a bit scary. Let them hang around a bit too much in my opinion. How many times have you seen that backfire? A lot, Oklahoma just couldn't get out of their own way....
UGA's offense has proven thus far to be fairly inept this season. Can they turn it around? Possibly, but I'm gonna need to see that first. I've seen one really good half out of their offense so far and it was against Clemson whose defense isn't elite.

It won’t be the last time this season we will have to adjust offensively to what the defense is doing. Georgia and Alabama come to mind.

We had some really, really good players that were under-utilized in 2015.
Yes, I know but we're still much better at every position group. That's not hating on that group. There were lots of good players and some studs. Now we have more good players and more studs. Especially at DL. QB. WR. OL. DB. LB. K. P. Much more quality depth too

I know there's been a lot of talk about this, but here's another perspective from the Oklahoma side.

Venables is a great defensive minded coach and Oklahoma had a very good defensive game plan. Their blitz packages were all over the place.

It would have paid significant dividends to have Nico start games last year to be ready in this type of situation. If we're being honest--Oklahoma is the first top tier defense/team he's played since high school and he's still catching up to the speed of the game. I think this bye week will give him time to settle down. Arkansas will seem much more manageable and will allow Nico to get the speed of the game under control going into Florida.

I don't want to call them "tune up" games---but before we play Bama--these two games fit nicely to get Nico up to his full ability.

I think we'll hopefully see him break out against Arkansas and hopefully he can be super effective against Florida and take full command of the offense.

I think he will be the guy in college football. He's made some incredible throws, but I'm going to stay hopeful that he's going to be ELITE and really start understanding pocket pressure, moving out of the pocket, using his legs, and making plays on the go that weren't available.

Balls to all of that. Revisionism of a high order. Fact is, we CRUSHED those people with our defense and broke their spirits. As nervous as it made me, the Vols GAVE the Okies those points in the 4'th quarter. coach Heup realized that they could only do so much with the time that was left. If the field hadn't been such a sh## show, and the refs weren't such homers, we would have boat raced those people.

His main objective was win the game and keep Nico healthy for another day.

There is a big reason why Clemson's defense has gone downhill, and it isn't because of lack of talent. Venables is one of the best to do it on the defensive side.

I also think that OU running a similar sort of offense to us allowed their defense to be much better prepared than most any other team we will face.
Not to mention Venables said they were practicing their defense against our offense since January. We hit them for big plays when we wanted to, just ask Bru and Donte.

I agree that we have more depth now.

I agree that Vols were well coached and I loved the win. My only gripe is that the middle was wide open for the quick slant many times and we never took advantage of that.

I was thinking this was gonna be someone admitting to rigging the field like they had it..it supposedly hadn’t rained in a week out there and it was a slip n slide
