So Chris thinks that al Qaeda is winning because 9/11 began our crumble due to our morality being lost? I think people like Chris are the problem with our country.

I view the divide in this country as being city vs. suburban vs. rural. I despise the “one size fits all” solutions that large population centers force on the rest of the country with the popular vote movement being the perfect example. IMO some states and cities are already practicing soft secession by creating sanctuary policies and implementing laws contrary to federal law by invoking states rights.

As an aside, some may recall the Russian former KGB academic who predicted the breakup of the US via civil war back in 1998. The only reason I scoffed at his prediction at the time is that he had TN, SC, NC, KY, & WVa going to the northeast sector.

It's funny how the illustrator left off KY, TN, MS, AL and AR.

This isn't the first time I have heard this argument and there is actually some merit to it. Southern states have little in common with the northeast or CA. The southeastern states that made up the Confederacy would go together pretty nicely, You can have a southwestern, northeastern, northwestern, CA and midwest territories. They could participate in defense as a group. I am surprised more people don't endorse a plan like this.

not a new idea. Knew I had seen something similar before (pretty sure there's a Ras thread about it somewhere in the VN basement)

Map of the Day: Ex-KGB Analyst Predicts Balkanization of U.S.

While they were cozying up in America, a prominent Russian professor named Igor Panarin was making rounds in that country's policy-making circles, also doing his best to undermine America. The map below is his creation. Released in 1998, it predicted the breakup of the U.S. into six pieces by 2010.

I think it's an interesting concept, and as was alluded to in the article, it seems outlandish (until it happens). It's interesting to ponder, but I'm doubtful I'll live to see something like that play out in my lifetime.

I disagree that we need to be broken up. Instead I would submit the central government has become much larger and more powerful than ever intended and needs to be pared back. The governors need to have more resources and power to run their states and not be beholden to the Feds to provide it. Let the states manage themselves more and leave each other alone.

That being said if a state wants to leave the union fine so be it. But then they have zero status like every other starting country and have to build the relationship.

There’s no reason for the US split up. It wouldn’t make our citizens happier, it wouldn’t get rid of political bickering, and it wouldn’t really help anyone except those who want to see the USA decline in wealth, power, and influence.

We've already declined greatly in influence.

If he is unhappy in his current location then he could move to a part of the country that is more in line with his lifestyle. What he wants already kind of exists. But when the federal govt, or people that try to use the federal govt, wants to dictate the minutia of everyone’s life towards a one size fits all country, I think that is a lot of the reason for the polarization he mentions.

We’re a big country with a variety of lifestyles and cultures. Individual states can cater to those local populations much better than people thousands of miles away. Pull back on fed govt influence and give states more freedom to run themselves.

Wait. You resent the population centers from imposing their wishes on other areas of the country with different politics. But you also dislike individual cities declining to enforce national policies with which they disagree?

Seems like your disdain is a direct function of whether you agree with the specific content of the policy you don't want followed. Pretty ironic.

Hmmm. I wonder who is responsible for that. I was told MAGA.
Really, you wouldn't think we diminished our standing some during the Bush years, then perpetuated that under Obama by taking a back seat. I'm not a Trump supporter but it didn't begin under him.

Go back and read the 3rd sentence in my post. This time slowly and carefully. Now go back and read your post starting at the 2nd sentence. Take your time. Now that you’ve finished, kinda makes you look stupid doesn’t it?

An interesting scenario considering there would be at least 3 new countries with nuclear weapons capability to come out of this.
