Question of the day

no googling

Which was the last American League Team to move to the National League and which was the last National League Team to move to the American League?

Extra credit if you can also give me the reasons why they made the move?

Milwaukee Brewers moved from National league to American league, and the Astros moved also from national to american, but I can't recall which one was more recent.

From American to national, I got no clue.

On July 28 in Baseball History...
  • 1875 - Philadelphia's Joe Borden, also known by the name Josephs, pitches the first no-hitter in Major League history, beating the Chicago White Stockings 4-0. The game takes one hour and 35 minutes to play.

  • 1931 - Bob Fothergill of Chicago hit a home run and a triple in an 11-run eighth inning as the White Sox beat the New York Yankees 14-12.

  • 1952 - Rogers Hornsby, after being fired by the St. Louis Browns, replaces another former Brownies manager, Luke Sewell, as manager of the Cincinnati Reds.

  • 1971 - Sixteen-time Gold Glove winner Brooks Robinson committed three errors in the sixth inning against the Oakland A's. Frank Robinson's three-run homer in the ninth won the game for the Orioles.

  • 1976 - Blue Moon Odom (five innings) and Francisco Barrios (four innings) combined on a no-hitter as the Chicago White Sox beat Oakland 2-1.

  • 1979 - Dave Kingman of the Chicago Cubs hit three home runs in a game for the second time in the season and became the sixth player in Major League history to accomplish the feat. Kingman's homers weren't enough as the Cubs lost to the New York Mets 6-4.

  • 1983 - American League president Lee McPhail ruled George Brett's "pine tar" home run against New York on July 24 should count. The umpires had disallowed the homer because the pine tar on Brett's bat exceeded the 18-inch limit. The remainder of the game was played on Aug. 18 with the Kansas City Royals beating the Yankees, 5-4.

  • 1985 - Lou Brock, Enos Slaughter, Arky Vaughan, and Hoyt Wilhelm are inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in a ceremony in Cooperstown, New York.

  • 1989 - Vince Coleman is caught stealing by Nelson Santovenia in the Cardinals' 2-0 win over Montreal, ending his Major League record streak of fifty consecutive stolen bases.

  • 1990 - Shawon Dunston tied a Major League record with three triples and led the Chicago Cubs to a 10-7 win over the Montreal Expos.

  • 1991 - Dennis Martinez pitched a perfect game as the Montreal Expos beat Los Angeles 2-0 at Dodger Stadium.

  • 1993 - Ken Griffey, Jr. tied a Major League record by homering in his eighth consecutive game, but it wasn't enough for the Seattle Mariners in a 5-1 loss to Minnesota.

  • 1993 - Anthony Young's Major League record 27-game losing streak finally ends. The Mets come from behind for a 4-3 win against the Marlins after Young's error allows Florida to take the lead.

  • 1994 - On the night the baseball players set an Aug. 12 strike date, Kenny Rogers of the Texas Rangers pitched a perfect game for a 4-0 victory over California.

  • 1997 - Milwaukee's Steve Woodard allows one hit and one walk with twelve strikeouts in eight innings in his Major League debut to blank the Toronto Blue Jays, 1-0, in the first game of a doubleheader. He sets down the final seventeen batters to defeat Roger Clemens, the leading winner in the Major Leagues. In the second game, the Brewers turn their first triple play in more than eighteen years in a 9-3 triumph.

  • 1999 - For the first time in twelve years, the U.S. baseball team beat the world champion Cubans, scoring five runs in the ninth inning for a 10-5 victory at the Pan American Games. Marcus Jensen's three-run homer broke a 5-5 tie.

Go checkout Ohtanis stats yesterday in DH pitched and won game one and hopomered Twice in game 2 damn going look good in Dodger Blue next season!!!
If the Angels didn’t have that Rendon contract I think he would stay there. Rendon has been paid nearly $130M to play in 200 total games since the start of 2020 and he is still owed nearly $120M the next 3 seasons until he is finally a free agent in 2027. Unfortunately, he has a full no-trade clause so they are screwed unless he decides to do the organization a solid, which would be highly unlikely. Feels like it will be a bidding war between the Mets, Dodgers, Yankees, and Red Sox. I suppose the Angels could bite the bullet and offer him that mega deal and just be stuck in luxury tax hell for the next 3 years but I just don’t see it happening. I really don’t want to see him with the Mets because the Braves would have to deal with him a lot more often. I’m alright with the Dodgers getting Ohtani as long as they send Freddie back to us 😁

My understanding it was down to Angels and Dodgers originally he has no desire to play on East Coast according to reports when he first came over....

If one of those teams makes him an offer he can’t refuse then I’m sure he would gladly play on the East Coast. That dude would take over New York and you know the Yankees are drooling to have this generation’s Babe Ruth.

This is Cardinal fans, the game has changed into the three run homers instead of stealing bases and manufacturing runs. Remember the running Cards in the 80's Willie McGee,Vince Coleman and Ozzie Smith actually enjoyed watching them even though I'm a Dodgers fan for life.. Jack Clark was only HR threat but those teams were good and please @cardvolfan don't bring up 1985 still hurts!!!

You’re spot on with those comments. By the way, that ‘85 Ozzie Smith home run was followed by what I consider to be the greatest call ever by a St. Louis broadcaster. Jack Buck: Go crazy, folks, go crazy.

My adult children got me a call from Ozzie Smith two years ago for my birthday. Loved him and that Redbird speed. Thanks for reminding me. Now, tell your boys to stop trying to steal Arenado at the trade deadline.
