There are nine ways to get on base. Some more painful then others.
In baseball, there are nine ways a batter can reach base:
1. Hit – A single, double, triple, or home run.
2. Walk (Base on Balls) – Four balls issued by the pitcher.
3. Hit by Pitch (HBP) – The batter is struck by a pitch and awarded first base.
4. Error – A fielder misplays the ball, allowing the batter to reach base.
5. Fielder’s Choice – A fielder attempts to get another runner out instead of the batter.
6. Dropped Third Strike – If the catcher fails to catch a third strike and first base is unoccupied (or there are two outs), the batter can attempt to reach safely.
7. Catcher’s Interference – The catcher interferes with the batter’s swing, granting first base.
8. Fielder’s Obstruction – A fielder illegally impedes the batter’s progress to first base.
9. Balk (Rare Case) – If a balk occurs with a runner on base and the batter puts the ball in play, they could be awarded first base if all runners advance.
While some of these are uncommon, they all count as legitimate ways to reach base safely.
