Saban sending Kiffin away after the Semi Final vs Washington caused him to lose a natty.... The Natty vs Clemson was Sark's first game calling plays and he made a lot of boneheaded calls at crucial times.
The problem with Bama in the Post Saban era is they will want someone who is as close to him as possible. Now there isn't another Saban out there, but the closest 2 coaches to him are Dabo and Kirby. Kirby won't come at all. He's at his alma mater and has a beast going. Dabo ain't leaving Clemson for Bama. He built the Clemson program, has 2 natty's with 4 appearances. There is no money advantage between what Bama could pay over Clemson. Dabo taking that job would need to win 3-4 titles to get out of Saban's shadow.
So when the 2 closest to Saban coaches turn Bama down, they will have to start looking at second and third tier coaches. At that point, I fully expect Saban to have a hand in the hire. Kiffin and Saban have somehow grown from an icy relationship.
When you look at who is left out there, who else would have some familiarity with Bama and Bama have familiarity with them?
Ryan Day, Lincoln Riley, Brian Kelly aren't going to leave current jobs for Bama.
So if Bama has struck out on their first and second tier candidates, who else is left that would be a strong hire? Insert Lane Kiffin. Especially if he runs off a few more 10 win seasons at Ole Miss where the all time average is like 55% win rate.
I don't mind Kiffin anymore. But he clearly has fell upward a bunch. I would not be surprised one minute if he ends up at Alabama. I think he is best suited to turn down the Auburn job, if offered, and roll the dice by waiting at Ole Miss to see when Saban retires.
