This was taken from "The Point After" section in the colummn covering the Eagles 27- 24 win over the Panthers, Monday Night.
Grading Gaither
Rookie Omar Gaither made his first NFL start Monday night, replacing Matt McCoy at weakside linebacker.
“I thought he did some good things,” Andy Reid said. “There are some things that he has to work on, but I thought he had some real good snaps in there. He played aggressive and pretty instinctive in there.”
After practicing most of the season as Jeremiah Trotter's backup in the middle, Gaither acquitted himself well on the weak side, finishing with five tackles (four solos).
"We figured with a week of work there he’d have a decent grasp of it and it worked out OK,” Reid said.
The Eagles allowed 4.7 yards per rush but only 108 rushing yards.
“I just wanted to play fast and play aggressive, and I think we did that as a defense as well,” Gaither said.
One thing they didn’t do was play soft.
“People felt like they weren’t as physical as they should’ve been,” Lito Sheppard said. “That was one of the questions about this defense, period. We were so-called soft, and I think they took that as a challenge – especially those front seven. They wanted to come out and prove a point in this game.”
