On rooting for your conference

Why do people care so much who others root for? Root however you want to, it's certainly not making any difference in the outcome of these games.

No, but the overall strength of a conference comes into play with the new championship format next year.

I hate hypotheticals, but here's a scenario:

Tennessee and Clemson are both 12-1, but for argument's sake UT is in the ACC and Clemson the SEC.

Given three undefeated teams ranked 1-3, who should get that fourth spot in the playoff?

I agree with you. There are benefits to playing in a strong conference. Hopefully obvious ones like that start to manifest themselves for us soon. But I also don't think it's unjustified to root against your rival if that's what floats your boat.

I think people make too much of the indirect consequences of these games on Tennessee's program.

Indirect consequences on UT or UF, no. I hate UGA like you guys hate Bama and us. When UGA played FSU in the Sugar Bowl a decade ago, I was a Seminole fan for one night, and when FSU played you guys in Tempe, I was all about the Vols...for a night.

That said, the timing of Bama's collapse, coupled with an Auburn loss Monday night is bad for the conference, especially with the playoff starting next year. Up to his point, a 1-loss SEC champ got greater consideration than 1-loss champs from other conferences.

Bama losing, followed by an Auburn loss would not be good going forward for any SEC team without a direct path to the 4-team playoff.
