Rare Rivals: Expect Virginia and Virginia Tech to be frequent foes for UT on the recruiting trail this year.
As expected, first-year UT assistant coaches Dave Clawson and Latrell Scott are returning to some of their old stomping grounds. Both have strong ties in Virginia from their time coaching at Richmond.
UT is recruiting at least four Virginia prospects: defensive end William Hill from Lafayette High in Williamsburg, offensive lineman Morgan Moses from Meadowbrook High in Richmond, linebacker Mike Privott from Lake Taylor High in Norfolk and defensive end/linebacker Tyrel Wilson from Hampton High.
Moses is one of the top prospects in the nation and is considering UT, along with almost a dozen other high-profile schools.
"Tennessee is a good school and I'm looking to see more about what they're offering," Moses told GoVolsXtra.com this week.
Wilson, whom UT's coaching staff is evaluating, has strong ties to UT. His father, James Wilson, was a Vol defensive end from 1989 to 1993 and a captain during his senior season.
"There's something about Tennessee, the vibe they have," said Tyrel Wilson, who lived in Tennessee for much of his childhood before moving to Virginia. "It makes my heart start pumping when I hear 'Rocky Top'."
James Wilson said his son won't make a decision until after his senior season and is considering several options.

After one weed suspension, Crews was kicked off the team along with Smith yesterday, for what is thought to be more of the Sticky Smoking. It turned out you can take the boy out of Hampton, Va., but you can’t take Hampton out of the boy. A Vols fan can only hope Crews’ buddy, Brent Vinson, has a better career and a longer career than Crews. We’re doing a lot of football recruiting up there this year, and while it is a veritable hot bed of talent, you run the risk of running into character issues like Crews, the Vick brothers, Allen Iverson and Jimmy Williams. Still, it’s a price you pay for talent.

you take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have....

There is a lot of talent in Virginia that I would love to see play for Tennessee... another reason why Clawson will make a big impact. It's always good to have players who love the team and university like Tyrel Wilson and his love of Rocky Top.

What's amazing about Crews is he seemed like a good, fairly intelligent kid. It seemed like his first arrest turned him around, but apparently not.

The fact remains that things don't turn out well if you don't surround yourself with good people. Jerod Mayo is from the same place and he did pretty well for himself.

I havent been a big fan of Duke Crews since the South Carolina football game in 2005. He was with Vinson on his visit and they were walking outside the gates and he kept running into people on purpose and laughing after they walked off. He kept on doing it until Gerald Riggs came by on crutches and saw them and sent them into the stadium.

Now I know he was alot younger but that just rubbed me the wrong way.

I'm glad he's not here anymore.

At first I was like who is this punk, and then he comes walking out of the tunnel onto the field and had the name white name sticker on his shirt I was like no f'in way. That next morning I looked at every single football recruit I could and saw Vinson (didnt really follow basketball recruiting so I had no idea it was Crews.) Then I remember people talking about Vinson being friends with a basketball player and looked at the bball page and found him and was like, mutha------.

Oh well, karma is a bitch, it just took its time biting him in the ass.

I've heard we are still talking to and recruiting Tahj Boyd, and Logan Heastie out of VA. Both are elite prospects that liked UT a lot early on, but commited to WVU. Boyd has been taking calls as of lately and is listening to suitors still. We'll see as the season plays out what happens here but both are elite talents that we'd make room for if they decided to decommit.

Logan Thomas - TE, DE, elite athlete out of VA. Friends with Je'ron stokes and likes clawson and Scott. Would be a huge get out of VA...he is extremely talented and athletic. I think we have a good shot at him.

maybe our VA connection can still come through

Collins has narrowed his choices down to Penn State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. He's in no rush to make a decision.

looks like we lost out on this one

CAVANAUGH AGREED with the premise that the number of Division I-A signees out of Virginia could top 50 for the first time this year.
The reason?
“Population,” Cavanaugh said.
He didn’t provide any numbers and I didn’t ask for any, although I suspect that Virginia’s status as the 12th most populous state in the country remains unchanged.
What I have noticed is the new high schools springing up to the west of Washington, D.C., in Loudoun County, and to the south in the counties surrounding Fredericksburg. Given the demographics, it makes sense – as Cavanaugh contends – that the academic profile of college prospects has improved, too.
