Now that it’s a safer space to be honest, I don’t think Nico A.) read coverages very well hence the effort to put go pros on the helmets during spring practice to see where his eyes were going and B.) we all remembered how many overthrows to wide open receivers the kid kept having. I shudder to imagine the amount of TDs we would’ve had if he had just completed them…

I think too much is being made of Nico missing the deep ball last year. The reality is that defenses were much better prepared to contain our wide spread passing game. I think I remember some analysis of how teams were playing us differently by playing an extra DB and running a 3-2-6 defense. Teams realized it was better to be prepared for the big chunk plays in the passing game and force Tennessee to have to methodically work their way down the field. But with out false starts, holding calls, or a negative play on 1st down, once we were behind the sticks it was harder to make up for it.

In addition to that, I think some tendencies of ours were picked up such as running the ball on 1st down right after picking up a 1st down.

So yeah, Nico missed some open plays down the field, but let's not brush over the fact the offense scheme and playcalling were less effective.

On 3rd and medium, when we needed 6-8 yards, we were more likely to run and get it than to have Nico find an open receiver and convert. Is that on Nico, the revivers or both? I suspect Nico.

It was much worse than that. He couldn’t read or make progressions either. He may have been a 5 star in high school but he went full on deer in headlights on the field against decent competition.

Yup, I watched him struggle between the ears all season. The kid has all the physical tools but he struggles reading coverages and his clock is a half second slow.

Well, when you run the same plays over and over, people do tend to kind if figure it out 😂 Some games were hella creative but some were pretty repetitive and the Defense saved the day lol… I’d love to know what the difference maker was.. It was like we had two completely different offensive coordinators, one creative and one boring and too safe.. it’s just how it looked imo 😂.. blast away

Players got to hit open folks and receivers have to catch the ball. We had a very good rushing offense. Play calling wasn’t the problem as much as execution was. There hasn’t been a year in the history of message boards that fans weren’t complaining about play calling. Yes, at times there is always going to be a few plays that are head scratchers but many times a lack of execution gets misinterpreted as bad play calling. Our main problem was our Quarterback and receivers had a problem being on the same page and a few games our O- line got worn down. GBO

So you think they had it all set up, they (players just couldn’t follow through? Possible.. a few games looked pretty vanilla to me…but like you said, if they couldn’t execute, maybe they had to be..!if the team suddenly starts gelling better in the fall, we will probably have our answer

Sampson can move back to TN when his football career is over and get a great job no problem. Also never buy a beer in the state. Long term he will make more off the fan base than nico

Billy Napier said it during his halftime interview when asked about their ability to stop Sampson in the first half. “We’re gonna make the QB beat us”. Yes the Vols won but not due to Nico. Due to his QB getting hurt & Lagway throwing an INT deep in their territory

Great point with the drops. It wasn’t just Nico missing something last year. Tons of drops.
