Pearl continues to put Vols on map - College Basketball Nation Blog - ESPN

One of the best articles I've read on Pearl. :good!: My favorite part....

PITTSBURGH -- For those who can’t understand the fierce loyalty both the Tennessee fan base and administration has shown Bruce Pearl, let this game serve as your explanation.

Tennessee 83, Pittsburgh 76.

Before Pearl, irrelevant would be an adequate word to describe the Tennessee basketball team.

Save a handful of years under Jerry Green a decade ago and with Bernard King and Ernie Grunfeld in the mid-70s, the Volunteers have never been part of the conversation. They were living in their proper place in the school’s sports hierarchy, a distant third to football and Pat Summitt.

Looks like a writer who slept through the first half of Don DeVoe's tenure and operates under the fallacy that women's basketball has ever been more popular than men's hoops in Knoxville.

Agreed. I'm thirty and while I always cheered for the men Bball team, this is the first time I've really had something to cheer about.

The past is the past. Anyone who thinks Tennessee Basketball has been more relevant at any point in the history of the program is obviously drinking his own pee for medicinal purposes.

just as an aide i was just watching the replay on espn3 because i was out christmas shopping and only able to catch little bits of the game on the radio.......
and Jay Bilas seemed to be absolutely furious about the suspension that Uncle Slive handed down to BP.
my favorite quote was "not, to be too harsh about this.... but that's just stupid!"
hahahaha

Fill me in on how good those Devoe teams were. I dont know anything about them from way back then. I would be willing to bet they were not nearly as relevant as they are now, tell me why im wrong...Id like to know.

Nobody's saying they were better than what UT has now. What I am saying is that they accomplished more than Jerry Green's teams. If you thought they were relevant, then DeVoe's teams were even more so.

Ray Mears' teams were very relevant back in the sixties and early to mid 70's. Stokley's capacity was around 12.5k, and it was sold out regularly. If the NCAA tournament took as many teams in the sixties as they did today, I would submit that Tennessee would easily double the tournament appearances under Ray Mears than what they did have.

Hats right, there was relevance with UT Basketball during the DeVoe years......He had some great players but never got it as completely together as Pearl has......

Willie Burton
Dale Ellis

Gary Carter

No they were not as relevant as the team is today. But a good group that took some tough teams to the wire.

When I started following UT BB, the coach was named Emmitt Lowery - so I've seen them come and go. CPB has only been here 5+ years. But by any measure, he stands alone. Above Mears and well above DeVoe in accomplishments: winning %, program "firsts," wins over Top 10 teams, just to name a few.

I admire how CBP can do it all: recruit great players, coach 'em up, then just 'will' the team to victory, as we saw yesterday at #3 Pitt. The Panthers were tough, physical thugs. We played them at their house. Every call by the refs went against us. All 3 of our big men fouled out. Yet we still won rather handily. When has a UT BB team been able to do that?

There's been talk here that the NCAA might impose on UT a 2-yr ban on post-season play. If that happens, Mike Hamilton should shake CBP's hand and offer him a vote of confidence. He may be a cheating SOB, but he's our cheating SOB. Also the best coach we ever had.

maybe she, like many others who aren't old enough to remember, interprets the history of his tenure by how below average the second half of his time as the Vols coach was, and also takes into account that his successful seasons were on the heels of CRM recruiting/success.

Then why is he commenting on the mid '70s?

Why does it matter? He stated men's bball was behind the women in his article and he is correct to say that Tennessee basketball has been irrevalent for the majority of it's history before Pearl. Sorry that makes you a little butt hurt. Pearl is and will be the man at UT for a long while.
