I was a student at UT when Bill Battle was coach. He couldn't recruit or coach. He even lost many of the best in state players to teams like Bama.

I do think if you give some preferemce to instate players, you don't lose the Patrick Willises and the Chad Penningtons.

Whom had you better have on your team a 3* Randal Cobb or a 4* Nu'Jeese Richardson?

We offered Cobb. He wanted no part of us because he was set on playing QB and we offered at WR.

He changed his mind after he got to UK and realized he had more of a future at WR

Pennington was offered a walk on position.

At the time Pennington was 170-180 lbs with a noodle arm. There was a guy named Peyton Manning and another guy named Tee Martin playing.

Marshall had an opportunity for CP to play for a national championship team that would go D1 in two years. Smart move for CP who had the chance to play ASAP.

UT didn't miss. Chad just developed beyond what everyone could have ever imagined except for those who knew CP well. Though talented, he was a late bloomer and would still have sat behind Manning and maybe even Tee Martin. He played early and gained weight which helped him develop into something great at the college level.

It was not a UT miss by any stretch.

We spend too much energy and money recruiting nationally and don't develop regional contacts with high school coaches and players. I'm not saying take a majority of players from instate but more than we have been the last ten years.......and look whwere our program is at present.

I agree, especially since the youth programs in Tennessee have improved tremendously over the past decade. I think now is the time to really start harvesting Tennessee talent. 2010 class has quite a few Tennessee players that are garnering national attention.

The only time this staff cares about where a recruit is from is when they tell the pilot where to land. They recruit with game film, not google earth.

I think right now, the staff is looking for immediate impact players - guys who can start or give substantial snaps their freshman year. Once we rebuild the base, they may start filling in the depth with more local guys - guys who really want to play for the Vols and give their all every day. We need the go-getters too because they will help push the "stars" to the level we fans expect.

We whiffed on 2 recruits last year (Edwards and Nuke). We cannot afford too many of those in this critical rebuilding stage.

I don't want to belabor the point, but over the years I've noticed guys from this state who give their heart and sole to the team.....like Eddie Brown, Dale Jones, Al Wilson and Tracy Hayworth. You can win with a nucleus of thes leaders on a team.

I think it is a gross miscalculation of the number of good players that are produced in the State of Tennessee, granted some of them play for less than powerhouse schools.

The state of Alabama has a population of 4 million and 85% of the University of Alabama players come from instate (plus they compete with Auburn). The state of Tennessee has a population of 6 million and UT recruits 85% of it's players out of state. And it is really the only significant major school, football wise, in the state.

If we recruited 85% of our roster in-state then we would be last in the SEC East on an annual basis. Even most of Vandy's players come from other states.

We will always get the in state kids that are good enough and are willing to give their heart and soul for the Vols.
The point that you seem to be making is that UT should give schollies to kids just because they are from TN.

Fulmer recruited incredible talent...except in his last few years.

very true. but to blame the old coaching staff for EVERY problem we have right now is a little steep. the fact of the matter is that the 07 class was on of fulmers top 4-5 classes and it helped hold this team together this year, with walker, jones, moore, donald and cooper etc. true he may not of left us with a roster loaded with players, but we did have some good talent heading into this year.
