Daniel Lewis points out some key areas in which Coach Jones & staff have made big strides in the past year.

Saturday marks the one-year anniversary of Jones’ arrival in Knoxville. The Vols just wrapped up another 5-7 campaign on the field – matching the previous two disappointing seasons. We’ll continue to dissect UT’s on-field status over the coming weeks now that the season is over.

But Jones is progressing a program that has fallen to new lows in recent years. A few ways Tennessee, as a program, has progressed in Year 1 of the Butch Jones era...

One year in, Tennessee

It's officially been a year so I'd like to give my thanks to Butch Jones and the coaching staff on their success in their first year at Tennessee. So far in my view they have done a great job. The effort put in on the recruiting class is amazing and may in fact be the saving grace of this hire. The '14 class will go down as one of the best Volunteer classes of all time IMO. Overall I'm excited for next year and glad to have this man as our head coach. GBO!

And now, I give you ... some gems about our head coach taken from before the hire! Enjoy!

He's a great hire for us... If we were Duke
Unfortunately, he wouldn't be playing with Brian Kelly's players here.. Not a fan.. I'll take a retread before Jones..
He's ridden on coattails for several years and won with another coaches recruits.

There's zero proof that he can recruit top SEC type players and get us back to winning in the SEC.
[Thread] Butch Jones = Dooley 2.0 We should honestly go after Butch Davis or Petrino before this guy.

#vomit
I don't know how anyone can anonymously defend this clown online if that's who we hire.
Butch jones really......I would rather have fulmer back and that's not a joke. My god Gruden to butch jones I really was delusional about what UT football ment to the rest of the country.

Complete FAIL
Rumors on TOS saying he has been offered. I am filling the bathtub and grabbing a toaster now.
Dooley 2.0

I'm done.

So pissed.

Well I won't be getting season tickets this year. My donations will be minimized if not dropped.

I'm still all orange. But not going to waste money giving to a program that hires Butch Jones.

Hart can burn in Hell.

Not being negative but keeping kids eligible to play is n his best interest n part of staffs job so congrats on doing what your core job description requires u

N on the no issues again if we were winning like bama or the 90s no one would care..IMO just more PR for a staff that lost to vandy when a bowl bid was on the line.

A+ on recruiting I've said for years u have to be N top 3 n sec to compete n at least he understands that.

"I think we've got the right captain of the ship," departing senior linebacker Dontavis Sapp said. "Coach Jones is instilling in us that we're going to be competitors and we're going to compete no matter what the circumstance is."

Jones, a self-proclaimed impatient person and competitive coach, will be disappointed that his first campaign ended in the Vols' fourth consecutive losing season, but he'll be encouraged by the groundwork laid this season and touted recruiting class he and his coaching staff have assembled as he continues trying to get the Vols back on track.

Butch Jones' first season with UT was always about rebuilding

I live by the motto, "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." CBJ cares about this program. That's good enough for me. There is no way you can have as much passion and drive as CBJ does and not be successful. We will return to our rightful place among the elite. It's just going to take some time.

As a true VolFan and VFL, imho this coach is the real deal and will bring back success for sure despite the dog gone Georgia goal line this year. But for the life of me I'm still wondering why instead of working on foot drills, hand drills, listening drills, showering drills, etc. - Coach Jones insists on our guys practicing smash mouth blocking drills, smash mouth tackling drills, open field blocking and tackling, bull-in-the-ring drills, oklahoma drills and live real time full gamespeed scrimmages. What gives with this type of new coaching? He's out of sync with the norm.

My favorite is "There is no proof he can recruit top SEC type players..."

Proven fact...Butch can recruit top talent!

"Not being negative" ... Excuse me, yes you are! OP begins a positive REALISTIC thread and then a NEGAVOL like you posts, I have gone back and looked at your posts with well over 80% being at best neutral or negative. Either you are one depressed dude or a troll!
My guess is you are a Candy fan!

How's this for realistic; 5-7 with a loss to Vandy. Open your eyes. They don't hang banners for winning first runner up in the recruiting national championship.

I like CBJ, and I hope he succeeds, but OP is WAY premature. Stop acting like a 10-year-old flowers and sunshine candy man.

What was our record last year with a MUCH better roster?

That was kind of you to extract the names of those quotes.

Admittedly I was underwhelmed by the hire on day 1 but not to the bridge jumping level of many on here. However, after a day or so looking into his career I quickly became optimistic by his record of success.

He won me over the way he attacked recruiting and made up serious ground on a lot of recruits in his shortened recruiting season. We missed on most of the those players last class but coming in 2nd when we weren't even on their radar on Dec 6 was daggum impressive. At that point I knew he would do well with the current class.

They don't play flag football in college football 'specially in the SEC.

I doubt that anyone was ecstatic over Butch Jones at the moment the hire was announced. I certainly was not happy at the time. His recruiting has surprised me, to say the least. I like his energy and he does seem to really care about the program. Still, to dig up knee jerk reaction posts made at the time of the hiring as if to call people stupid, seems like a reach. Especially after a disappointing 5-7 season.

Butch Jones had zero experience in the SEC prior to the UT HC job so we all had justification in questioning this hiring. After one year, I'm very satisfied though.

Granted it is hard to thump our chest after 5-7 but there is a difference in being initially underwhelmed and some of the true vitriol that was spewed on here and twitter.

So only like minded sheep are allowed to post? That is what you are basically saying, in a jerk sort of way.

Not everyone drinks from the altar of Butch Jones. He is doing great in recruiting, but a pretty solid argument could be made that he underachieved on the field.

He'll get his time to prove it on the field again, but some of you sheep need to calm down.

It's not the negative guys that typically start calling names and act like babies. It is the orange glasses crowd.

I stand firmly by my belief that he is not a great gameday coach. When or if he proves different, I'll gladly admit it. But the guy is a hell of a recruiter.

That much is not in doubt.

What was Urban Meyer's SEC experience prior to FL? Saban's prior to LSU?

Who did the fans realistically want that had this coveted SEC experience? (excluding Gruden because that was not realistic).

There is not another coach I'd rather have on the hill.

This is an absurd statement, and the fact that five people have already liked it is insane. Butch may become the second coming of Neyland, but for the love of god we don't know yet.
