One year in, UT's program is progressing under Jones

Like most fans, I'm glad that Jones is here, and I look forward to seeing our team grow and improve.

One other potential coach...minus all of the off field issues, strictly coaching and game performance... I have wondered about is Petrino. This hire would have possibly kept Bray, Hunter, CP (he may have gone regardless), and Rivera at UT. One can't help but wonder how the season plays out with these guys still wearing Orange and White.

Again, not a "bashing Jones" post, just a curiosity, considering some of the offensive struggles and inconsistency we had this year.

As a true VolFan and VFL, imho this coach is the real deal and will bring back success for sure despite the dog gone Georgia goal line this year. But for the life of me I'm still wondering why instead of working on foot drills, hand drills, listening drills, showering drills, etc. - Coach Jones insists on our guys practicing smash mouth blocking drills, smash mouth tackling drills, open field blocking and tackling, bull-in-the-ring drills, oklahoma drills and live real time full gamespeed scrimmages. What gives with this type of new coaching? He's out of sync with the norm.

Old school weeding out process.:peace2:

It's officially been a year so I'd like to give my thanks to Butch Jones and the coaching staff on their success in their first year at Tennessee. So far in my view they have done a great job. The effort put in on the recruiting class is amazing and may in fact be the saving grace of this hire. The '14 class will go down as one of the best Volunteer classes of all time IMO. Overall I'm excited for next year and glad to have this man as our head coach. GBO!

And now, I give you ... some gems about our head coach taken from before the hire! Enjoy!

Ya know.... Attribution to each of those comments and a plate of crow would be fitting.

Jones has been the head coach for a year now.

Digging up old posts to prove some people were unhappy with his hire at the time is kind of pathetic.

Hart missed the mark badly on his first several choices and the Dooley hangover had everyone but the most chemically enhanced down on this program.

Circumstances and perspectives have changed.

The jury is out on the x's and o's on game day but Jones is proving to be a stand out recruiter and solid face for the program so far.

Because I'm not a nice person, and because I give zero damns what you think of me, here's some responses to the Butch Jones hiring. If your name is on this list, I'm not sorry in the least:

Oh no . . . please no . . . I can't believe this is actually happening . . .

I pray that this is just the false profit to the gruden that the og,s talk about

How much furniture will burn tomorrow and what will the rock say? Fire Butch on the day of his presser. lol

Everything I've said about Dooley...... Substitute it with Butch Jones. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Best of luck to Jones if he's hired but I don't think it will end well for him or us.I've got a feeling we'll be doing this again in three years.

He's ridden on coattails for several years and won with another coaches recruits.

There's zero proof that he can recruit top SEC type players and get us back to winning in the SEC.

I'd rather see AD Hart bump up the offer to $4.5 to $5 Million per year and go get a real coach that's also PROVEN that he can recruit top players against the best recruiters in the business.

We need a rock solid HOMERUN hire and we need it NOW because the SEC is only getting tougher.

VFL...GBO!!!

4 NFL guys contacted UT, it took this long dead period coming up, just hear some more interviews now until the right comes along. Don't settle, Jones seems like a settle hire!

Did not want Charlie Strong do not want Butch Jones.

I am sure Jones is a fine coach but how is he going to be an elite recruiter in the SEC?

Jones is not the coach to take the Vols to the next level.

Rivera was a senior. There's no way Petrino could have kept him on the roster. I doubt CP would have stayed either. Bray and Hunter are debatable. I'm not sure the season's results would have been much different overall based on past experience with Bray, even with Petrino coaching him. At this point, I really don't care about the what-ifs of the coaching hire. I do see legitimate progress on the team. I wish we had seen better offensive performance, but we were looking at severe lack of depth along with some experienced under-performers on the roster. We will definitely know more about this staff next December.

I'll admit, my first though was that we had just hired a guy even Dooley could beat.

But beating a top 10 team and recruiting the way he has makes me a believer. Also bringing the Tennessee family back together is awesome. Finally, he and the players representing us with class makes me proud.

The only people eating crow would be the ones that said we'd go 4-8 or 3-9. Other than that and recruiting, he hasn't made anyone need to eat crow.

Too many beatdowns and a pathetic showing against Vandy ensure no crow eating is necessary.

So only like minded sheep are allowed to post? That is what you are basically saying, in a jerk sort of way.

Not everyone drinks from the altar of Butch Jones. He is doing great in recruiting, but a pretty solid argument could be made that he underachieved on the field.

He'll get his time to prove it on the field again, but some of you sheep need to calm down.

It's not the negative guys that typically start calling names and act like babies. It is the orange glasses crowd.

I stand firmly by my belief that he is not a great gameday coach. When or if he proves different, I'll gladly admit it. But the guy is a hell of a recruiter.

That much is not in doubt.

I don't know yet if he is a great game day coach. Saban is not. He is a great recruiter. He has an awesome system. There is so much more to being a head coach in the SEC than game day.

Jones does have arguably the best recruiting class coming in, he did wonders for our APR. He has healed many of the wounds caused by previous coaches insofar as Majors and alumni. He has made Tennessee a major name again. He has a win against a top 10 team. He beat a SEC team on the road.

Now you could argue that he wasn't awesome on game day, but are you not looking at the players? He was playing with Worley, then Dobbs a true freshman, whose first three games were against Bama, Mizzou, then Auburn. We ended up playing Pig, Smith and Croom at WR. We had multiple slow, walk-on DBs playing, as well as a LB core that had exactly one player that would be in the 2 deep at any other school.

Next year we will have North, Pearson, and Malone. Pearson and Malone would be starting on this team. We have a 5 star TB coming in, not to mention 2 TEs in the top 10 with Helm being ranked in the top 3. We have an absurd amount of DEs coming in, and I didn't even mention how much of a weakness that they were this year. I can go on and on, but the point is that he has addressed many of UT's concerns this year, and the major concern, the lack of quality players, he has addressed in this class. Judge his game day abillities when he has the players. He will begin to have then starting next year.

IMO, he has done everything and more that could be expected. He has done more than I had hoped he could.

I agree to an extent. Much more is needed to prove he is the best coach ever selected, but let's not get things twisted. When you decisively bash an individual for their lack of ability or qualifications, you should own up to the fact that you were woefully wrong.

I fully support the value of one being able to voice their opinions but when you're wrong and you have bashed a concept or event with no basis, you should own up to it.

some of the ones that believe themselves to be the smartest argued that he wouldn't be able to recruit in the sec either

Imo you've made your mind up too soon. Would you not say CBJ was a good gameday coach against USC and UGA? I would. I guess sometimes he just forgets how to coach, right?

How's this for realistic; 5-7 with a loss to Vandy. Open your eyes. They don't hang banners for winning first runner up in the recruiting national championship.

I like CBJ, and I hope he succeeds, but OP is WAY premature. Stop acting like a 10-year-old flowers and sunshine candy man.

Just so that I/We understand you correctly, if you point out some things that have changed for the better in the program prior to the team's w/l record reflecting it that means you act like a "10-year-old flowers and sunshine candy man"? I'm not sure what that is or how a 10 year old could even be a man, but sign me up, because I think CBJ has done some really great things this year. Being a hard ass dip**** doesn't qualify you as a winner. In fact a balance of attitudes typically leads to more success. But you go with what you think works for you. :hi:

There is not another coach I'd rather have on the hill.

I can think of a few honestly. But I am glad Butch is our coach. Great guy, great ambassador for the program and University, great recruiter......just need now to see that he's a great coach.

Point out thing better for the program? People are posting quotes from the day he was hired, as if he's proven anything on the field. He's proven he CAN beat a top 10 team, like Dooley could, if he could count. Dress it up all you want, 5-7 sucks. I should post the quotes after the SC game where people said, "welcome to the bowls" or " will it be Peach, or Music City."
