"Open the T" !!!!

This isn't about starting a tradition, it's about an annoying, contrived addition to one of the most well-known entrances in college football.
It hasn't been the same since the 80s when they changed the T position, has it?

Or maybe traditions can be modified without destroying them.

Edited: watch the video for the original T formation, as it occurs to me many of you guys are too young to recall the "real T" before the tradition was "destroyed" by altering it (because of the locker room changes.)

Bottom line: things change. Deal with it.

I have not been over to Neyland recently, but heard discussion on a radio show that the PA guy is now screaming into the mic right before the team runs out of the tunnel for the band to "Open the T" !!!!

If true, I find this sickening. One of the magical things about our entrance is the fans standing and watching the band, waiting for them to start splitting apart, because we know the team is in the tunnel ready to run out on the field. The spontaneity of the moment is what makes it so special. So many things in modern sports have become contrived and forced. We don't need a legendary college football entrance to be ruined by an ear-cracking PA's booming voice. I already hate the loud 3d down announcement, as if Tennessee fans don't already know the down and distance of the game they are watching. And while we are on the subject, I despise the incessant loud DJ music blaring at every opportunity in football, basketball and baseball. Let the emotion and the fans' reactions run theirOK natural course and put the band back in charge of the music on game day.

OK, that's pretty dumb. But life is change. Best get used to it.

I agree. I’d be fine with no PA announcer unless the ghost of Bobby Denton shows up[/QUOTE
While we're at it, is the UT field announcer trying to sound like the guy at Kentucky? Seems like every time he does that annoying THIRRRRRRRRD DOWN thing the opposition just waltzes to another FIRST down. I'm with the OP: let the opening of the T speak for itself.

Much more irritating to me is the incessant playing of Rocky Top. It's played far too often and we're often referred to as "rocky top" which is sickening to me

I just want to win a bunch of damn football games for a change! Is that too much to ask? I’m a traditionalist, but run pink dachshunds, fat dudes in banana hammocks through the T and play Cardi B as long as we win A LOT of games. Like, Bama A LOT.

Nail meet hammer. I would say the same for the Woo but that battle is lost. Still time to nip this in the bud.

Hawkeye - your comment is appreciated.

I do find it very annoying that someone who values tradition is automatically disparaged and depicted as a 60-year-old curmudgeon sitting on his porch with a shotgun.
I felt the same way in my 20's as I do now. I do not criticize UT for every little thing. It is not too much to expect sound decisions to be made by competent administrators.
Nor is it antiquated to desire their focus to be on maintaining the fundamentals of a quality athletic department and not on adding frivolous concoctions to promote an inferior program.
Funny that the current generation says they are cool and inclusive but when older people make a comment you get decisive remarks.

Hey, Volsmoothie, why don't you and Hawkeye meet somewhere and hug and exchange roses?
I say this all in fun.... However it is not often we see two posters work so hard to tell each other that they respect each others view.

I'm SURE these conversations were had by some a few years ago...

"I can't believe they stuck them "T's" on the sides of the helmets!

"I can't believe they painted our endzones ugly checkerboard!"

"Why are they playing Rocky Top?? That's not our fight song!"

"Why is our team running through an imaginary T before the game??"

"A blue tick coon hound?? We're the Volunteers! That makes no sense!!

My point is traditions have to come from somewhere and there's always room for new ones. Some will agree with them, some won't. If they catch on they become time honored traditions. If they don't catch on then they're gimmicks and will fade away. Either way, we should never stop trying to find ways to add to or enhance the pageantry of Tennessee football!

Exactly . . . It's not an affront to humanity when somebody changes the routine. Chances are, it will go the way of Smokey's howl, 3rd Down for What, Walking Horses on the sideline, artificial turf and 100 other things that they tried and decided not to keep.

Ugh!! I want them to bring this back so much!! I don't understand it! If FSU and USC can have people riding horses on the field as part of their pregame, why can't we?

At some point, they tore the artificial turf and haven't been back since.

Interestingly, what bothers me is that all of our players run through the same side of the top of the T to the sidelines. My OCD needs 50% to turn left and 50% to the right.

It’s a running joke on a local radio show. It doesn’t actually happen at the games.

I was at the Pitt game, my first in three years. What I found most annoying was the music played far too often and for far too long. Seems we’re trying to mimic the NFL. Music played well after ball was snapped. Very amateurish. Too much. Need to rethink and reengineer this approach.

Here’s my stadium gripe—the ads on that ugly brown matting lining the brick borders of our end zones. It’s so ugly. Okay I’m done.
