Not running the plays because you are afraid for Cal to see them is just goofy.
i would agree and was the main reason for this thread.....Cut did say that he probably shouldn't have even brought it up, but he's just paranoid that way....so i think he knows it's kind of "goofy" as well....and he probably shouldn't have said it, but rather keep it to the "fundamentals etc...." approach.

in retrospect, it probably isn't that big of a deal, and again, probably is the right course of actoin given our obvious need to improve up front.

On that we agree. Personally, I'd like to see the Gators spend the first week or two working on fundamentals of blocking and tackling. Always seems to come down to that in the end, you know?

Let UT have a closed scrimmage. If thats what they think it will take. I just don't want to hear any excuses later. Well Cal scouted our offense, knew our plays, etc. They are the coaches if they feel its important enough reason, let them close scrimmages too.

I would rather see that, then run a bunch of plays you dont planning on running next year, just for the sake of preventing Cal from seeing your offense, doesn't make any sense.

Isn't it funny that at this level these guys can't make an open field tackle worth a crap. I can understand blown coverage and getting caught in a scheme but nothing is worse than loosing a game due to poor blocking and tackling.

Poor tackling was not our problem last year. Dropping passes, turnovers and poor decision making by our QB's was the biggest problems we had.

Fundamentals seemed to be a big problem last year. Look at all the offensive line movement calls last year. Especially when we had a drive going. I would rather see the fundamentals instilled in our guys before the season starts. Dropped passes, fumbles from not tucking the ball and using two hands to protect, line movement, missed blocks, running the wrong route, these are all fundamental problems. If these problems are not fixed before the season starts, then all the coaches in the world cannot buy you a win. I personally am hoping for a much improved offense and a shored up defense to help us go maybe 8-4 or 9-3 this year. I know all will not agree, but these are just some things I noticed last year. Just my :twocents: worth.

I agree with you, the best thing for the Vols will be to go into the fall more fundamentally sound. If they can't block, catch or hold on to the ball it's not gonna matter what plays they run.

In my opinion it was poor execution not play calling that led to the disaster last year

And just which one of the overpaid coaches has taken the blame for such crappy fundamental breakdowns last year? Fulmer?

Guys, I'm telling you, get ready for the Vols to get slapped around by several teams this fall.

Your probably right. I didn't see the scrimmage but those who have seemed to not be impressed. Lots of young players learning their position and qb making bad mistakes and wr dropping passes.

Even if we have another bad year like 5-6, I dont think Fulmer is going anywhere. The amount money to buy out a coach making 2 million a year for the next 3 years is probably around 5 million.

This appears to be a pretty sad commentary on our recruiting...if indeed we have all these All-American players, All-State, All-Everything & they DON"T know the basics.

C'mon on there's a sucker born every minute, but let's get real!

finally some voices of reason. i said i believe the vols will be 7-5 this year. Cut is a improvement, but he doesn't have manning and great talent to lead this team to the promise land. i was talking to one of my friends in ohio tonight, he is a buckeye fan. he agreed alot of tennessee fans are living in the past instead of the future and he agreed tennessee would land a top notch coach if fulmer stepped aside. this from a OSU fan. i think we are in big trouble this year and for years to come.

well...not showing our offense for possible scouting for future games is smart but come on...what offense do we have to hide
1st down: run up middle =2 yards
2nd down:ainge pass incomplete to swain
3rd and long:run up middle=3 yards punt
4th down: punt

The real question is, who does a guy named Orangewhiteblood pull for in the Orange and White game?

Either or.... I'm just hoping everyone looks decent or I'll have to read more of the above.

its a good idea, with a new offense why let anyone see it for a pointless spring game thats just to raise fan interest.

I don't even see what the point is of having a Spring game anymore. It hasn't been a good show in years, and now they are running even more of a vanilla offense than we see during the season, if that is possible.

Isn't the Spring game for the fans? If so, what is so entertaining about it?

2 years ago the Orange and White played to a tie. That's about as good a show as you can ask for. The game costs five bucks to attend, or it's free if you're a student. I don't really see what more you can ask for from a spring SCRIMMAGE. Some people are ridiculously difficult to please.

I for one am excited to get my first look at J. Crompton and D. Ryans. I'm also curious to see if the return game has gotten any better on special teams. If you went last year, you probably noticed that behind Wilhoit, there is ZERO depth at kicker. So I hope to see a better showing from his backups this year. These are reasons enough for me to at least stick around for the first half.

What top notch coach do you have in mind? Wait. Nick Saban! He really turned LSUs program around. Whatever happened to him anyway?

The fact of the matter is that Fulmer is a decent coach, with UT loyalty. We might be able to snag a hot coaching commodity, but if he has mega-success at UT, he's just gonna leave us for more cash elsewhere (NFL). Fulmer won a national championship. He deserves a little time to try and get us back to an elite level. As for your friend Eddie George, he'll probably be ready to fire Tressell in a few years, when he hasn't won another national championship. (Even though they actually stole their last one from Miami with the help of the officials).
