The Fan Upstate, which is a sports station on SC FM radio, had a Clemson guy on before the game. He said Clemson needs to win this one because Tennessee used to take all the talent from SC which kept them and USCe down, and kept UT dominant. Said if Tennessee wins, they can make the case they’re surpassing Clemson again and revert things back that way.

Wonder if this starts taking shape now, and if he will walk those statements back when he appears on the show next week.

There is some truth to it. Clemson's rise coincided with Tennessee's fall.

Tahj Boyd was the beginning. Committed to TN until Kiffin said "No Thanks". They began to get players that TN would normally have taken. Amari Rodgers, Tee Higgins, Trevor Lawrence, etc...just a few who likely would've been Vols if TN wasn't sucking.

Lots of negative recruiting against UT in those days, and Clemson “somehow” was able to, all of a sudden, pull in CJ Spiller, Boyd, some key defensive players, and then you know the rest they pulled in. The local flagship station for Clemson has a whole daytime lineup of homer yaks who bash Tennessee at every opportunity. It’s obvious they’re either funded or controlled in some way by the university, as they constantly defend the mediocre-at-best basketball programs. They don’t have much to gush about once football is over.
They weren’t talking too much on their social media yesterday, though. Strange how that happens🤷‍♂️
I’ll admit that I, along with other UT fans in the area, wasn’t too wild about this matchup, given all the injuries and opt-outs, because a head-to-head win for Clemson would have made things worse. But we are so dang proud of the TEAM that whipped the tigers and you’d be hard pressed to find a happier bunch around here these days, except maybe for the UGA fans once they come out of hiding

I don’t think anyone profited more from our downfall than Clemson. They basically hijacked our program and turned into us.

I agree, but it was our own incompetence that made it happen. Turning away recruits, coaching changes from one bad coach to another. I don't blame any of the kids for going to Clemson as we were in constant flux.

We beat Florida, LSU, Alabama & Clownson. That will absolutely be impactful out on the recruiting trail. There are 24-25 kids that are still talking about the Bama game atmosphere. Closing the season with a bowl win against Clemson was big. We are certainly recruiting against them for some high level talent. And they all saw the game.

I completely agree . We were our own worst enemy. Clemson happened to be in the best position fill that vacuum .

I think the Clemson guy is spot on. Clemson is almost the mirror image of the Vols teams of the mid-90's to early 2000's. Fulmer lost recruiting battles to Spurrier at SC, Richt at UGA, Meyer at UF--by my estimate, at least 4 four star players each year. That's what caused the decline in the Fulmer years. With SC trending up and the Vols rocketing up, coupled with the weakness of the ACC, that will hurt Clemson recruiting a lot--maybe 3-4 four star players each year. The Vols need to start getting 2-3 four star players from South Carolina each year to accelerate the Clemson decline.

Absolutely. Given the explosive offensive productivity that Heupel displayed this season, homegrown talent, especially on that side of the ball, will not be departing Big Orange Country for Clemson. And, as our program continues to improve, we will begin to win our share of head-to-head recruiting battles in South Carolina, just as Fulmer did in his heyday.

Jim Donnan came in and stole some recruits too. They damn near stole Haynesworth. Bruce Thorton was a db we needed. Auburn clipped us on Ronnie Brown & Cadillac. We lost Charles Rogers to Michigan. We even got "Mossed" one time.

Which drives home the point that when UT has been good to great, we've had excellent recruiting classes filled with star level talent. None of that "coach 'em up" nonsense. Big-boy NFL talent. Across all of the positions..

Not sure about all the talent but UT used to do very well. Per capita, SC produces as much or more talent as any state.

However the improvement in NC hsfb is a factor here too.

Agree 100%. I have long said we absolutely need Clemson to return to mediocre status so we can be first in line for GA talent (UGA can't take them all) and dominate the Carolinas again.

💯!!! This is where it matters! Spend some time looking at the ON3 and 247 recruiting list by state, especially GA, for the current cycle!

We did it correctly. We needed to be the team toput a nail in that coffin. Now we have to knock them down in recruiting and speed the process.

We need to see if we can find some more Bilitnikoff winners in South Carolina. Maybe see if Hyatt has some cousins back there.

Once Randy Moss got the Notre Dame offer he was always signing there. None new he would be "opted out" basically before "opting" on campus

One critical loss for UT was Dan Brooks who left when Fulmer was fired. He went to Clemson and ended our Carolina recruiting relationships.

Clemson is on the down swing now and will not recover.

Bingo, bingo, bingo. This is what happened. Dan Brooks was one of the best coaches ALL TIME at UT. Coached countless defensive lineman to the pros.
