For the life of me I can't understand why everyone is in a dither about this game. Who has Oregon State beaten? Have you taken a look at their 'awesome record'?
Let's take a peek:
They beat:
Longwood (who?) 2-7 record
Portland (who?) 2-9 record
UC Riverside 5-5 record
Hofstra 7-2 record beating powerhouse teams like Naval Acadamy & Stoneybrook
Arkansas 3-7 record
Marquette 4-5 record
Idaho 7-3 record from the powerhouse conf Big Sky
CSU Bakersfield 1-10 record

Cmon guys lets put all the Holly BS behind us. This game is going to be a blowout. It will be good for the ladies to get some confidence from.

^The definition of wearing orange-colored glasses. :lolabove: :p :)

I admire the perspective. Kudos to the OP for being able to see things in that light. Never know....he might be right. UT might come out and play a full game well and beat the hades out of OS. Then again....

It's not so much that Oregon State is a good team but more so we turn the ball over 20 times a game and shoot 20%. What halfway competent team can we beat playing like that?

And also Oregon State beats their cupcake teams soundly. We don't.

I guess their fans could say the same thing. We have beat a couple of scrub teams by two points, beat some horrible teams by less than ten, and vs the good teams we have lost by double digits. Can Tennessee fans say LaTech....I thought you could.

We suck right now. Let's be real about it. We are about to rack up the most losses we have had in a very long time!! Including to the national powerhouse OS. :(

What you say may be true but in reality we have had a difficult times against cupcakes we should have blown out of the gym. Add to that we have a coach who admits that she does not know what to do. She has a hard time recruiting the team's needs. In addition, if a team plays zone we are in deep crap. This is not B.S. unless you think the truth is B.S. What has this team done that would make you think this game will be a blowout? I hope your dream comes true but, unless the Lady Vols start playing better, this team is going to have issues with top 15 teams. I will say that the combo of Nared, Graves, Double D, Carter, and Te'a(under control) may be the LV's best chance to win. Right now Russell is a liability. That in and of itself seems strange since she played very good in the World Games this summer. However, Holly was one of the assistant coaches at the World Games under the Northwestern head coach.

Te'a Cooper, Jaime Nared, Diamond DeShields and Bashaara Graves are going to show up for this game and the Lady Vols will win by 10.

No, "really overhyped" is starting the season in the top 4, then dropping out of the top 25 by the end of December...

I think you mean VaTech.
We haven't played LaTech....though, that would be fun considering who their Coach is. :eek:k:

Perhaps it was a reference to LA Tech being the gold standard of WCBB years ago, but now they are a picture of mediocrity. Tennessee was also the gold standard of WCBB years ago, and now? The author of the statement may have been comparing the current state of the two programs. I'm only guessing here.

Actually, OSU is overrated based on their body of work. But so is TN.

There is a real danger that a close win here (probably the best possible expectation) might give the LV's a false sense of security on whether the team has "turned it around."

The first real benchmarks will be in January against ND and Kentucky.

On the other hand, a big loss tonight would be ominous.

I think meekfan makes a good point, the opponents of Oregon State aren't exactly the who's who of women's basketball. Only two teams with a winning record and not a single ranked team among them.

The team with the best record, Hofstra, is ranked 103 by Massey. They were predicted to win by 18 and won by 23, which is a little better than expected but not enough to be notable.

Idaho is the other team with a winning record and only marginally better according to Massey ranked 86. These are games that Oregon State was expected to win easily.

Marquette's record is under 500 and they are ranked 135 by Massey. There was supposed to win by about 19, But only one by seven points. They are outscored in the first and second quarters, and were down by 10 points before waking up and taking the lead. Coming from behind to beat a triple digit ranked team is not what we usually expect from a team ranked seventh in the polls.

It is almost surprising that such a pedestrian performance would earn a seventh place ranking. But they aren't the only top-ranked team feasting on cupcakes. Baylor and Maryland both play a weaker schedule. Missouri's schedule is weaker, Georgia's is about the same and Mississippi State's schedule is far weaker. When you haven't lost a game it's hard to justify moving you too much further down the list

Thanks for adding the Massey ratings Eric, good info. btw Maryland, currently ranked 6th at 10-0 has their wake up call in 8 days. They play Ucon in the Maggie Dixon game in Madison Square Garden. This team isn't Notre Dame. Ucon is going to absolutely cream them.

OSU's ranking is based on their winning the PAC12 season title last year and that tey return their entire starting 5 from that team. The Beavers had trouble at TBA last year, getting whistled for 28 fouls. The LV's attempted 34 ft's to 9 for OSU.

While it will be interesting to watch the two 6'6" posts match up, the story will be the battle of the backcourts. OSU's strength is in their guards, Wisner and Weise. If they start hitting their 3's it could be a long night for Tenn.

If we can find a way to score over 70 points we might have a shot. 50's want get it done and Massey say we lose by 11.

You nailed your assessment of OSU. We win by 3, and holly gets a raise and extension.

I would agree with your assessment of Oregon State. They are ranked because they beat all the cupcakes they played. They did not pass the eye test for me. They would get killed if they played one of the better teams in WCBB. To have lost to Oregon State would have been embarrassing. If I were the coach, I would have played zone against Tennessee. Why did their guards jack up threes only ten seconds into the shot clock instead of trying to get a higher percentage shot from those two tall white girls?

I guess we can mark the OSU coach off as a Holly replacement. :eek:lol:

I think the defense had a lot to do with it. I also think the pressure of playing a ranked team at home and missing some of their shots early amplified the urgency factor and put even more pressure on them. The 17 point leads in the first half did not help. To their credit, they did mount a comeback and make a game of it in the 2nd half. I think they are a good team that will get better and will be a force in the tournament.

We were fortunate that they missed a lot of open threes in the first half and they do shoot layups like us so that helped as well.

This is the understatement of the day. OS was shooting 40% of their 3's as a team. Last night they went 4 for 24 (about 16%). The old saying, "live by the 3, die by the 3" was never more true.

That said, we just got by them. An 'almost' epic collapse in the 2nd half. I am convinced now (for today anyway) that we are a mediocre team at best - for whatever the reason(s). This is not going to be a pretty season.
