Ouch, right in the Nostalgia!

I learned to drive a VW bus. Four on the floor and underpowered to boot. One quickly learned to use the appropriate gear.

I learned to drive in a 65 VW bug with a bus motor and sunroof. Her name was "Lil Red". Taught my 16yo daughter how to drive in my manual civic.

Heres a pic of my Dad (RIP) and me doing a motor swap in a 53 Bug the same summer. I was 15, circa 1992. Hill AFB Utah

Wish I had that 65 with the sunroof right now. It was sweet. My Dad restored VWs for fun and went to the VW swap meets etc. Had lots of bugs and busses. That 65 probably made about 150hp but they weigh so little that it was quick. Pretty red paintjob and chrome mag wheels. It was really fun to drive. Some of my favorite memories as a kid were camping in Yellowstone in a pop-top bus. Miss my Dad. Cancer took him a few years ago. He was a diehard VOL, both my parents graduated from Seymour HS off Chapman Hwy. Knoxville will always be my home, even if I never get to live there again.

My first car, and what I learned on.

Still sad I wrapped it around a telephone pole, (well cut the pole in half), but it saved my life in teh accident on the way out. I should not have walked away. A car came over center line, and when I tried to avoid, the car went spinning. I was airborne at one point, cut the pole in half turned it into a c shape. But the glass never even shattered. and all I had as a cut on my foot. Small nimble fast, and built like a tank.
