Our field looks pretty rough right now

Yeaaa...An elderly man died and a tuba players lips got ripped off after trying to pull away from the mouthpiece...probably the roughest game ever played..

And Dallas got screwed by a no call on that final drive too

Forgot which receiver it was, but the opposing team knew he was not going to be thrown the ball the plays he was running off the line with his hands in his pants. When he was part of the play he would have his hands free.

I have a feeling that we are inevitably heading towards one of those new fancy shmancy turf fields like Bama and Mizzou have.

I thought Bama was real. I know Mizzou got a new artificial field last year. Ole Miss, Mizzou, and Vandy have artificial fields in the SEC.

The new artificial turf does lessen the risk of injuries and I'm all for it and would understand if we went to the turf, but I myself as a fan like to see grass stains on uniforms and not small pieces of black rubber.

A little dated but a good read:

Summer to Saturday: Neyland Groundskeepers Ready for Gameday - UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics

Looks like Wednesday following a game is the worst day.

And right now as the nights are getting cooler the recovery will get even slower. Glad to see they are overseeding with rye. I hate the idea of artificial turf, but having grass in Tennessee will allways be tough. The Titans have the same problem. When the season starts it is too hot for blue grass but at the end it's too cold for bermuda. Compounding the cooler temps, the grandstands block so much sunlight. Green Bay has ot right with a warming system under their turf. But for the college season it really is only an issue for the last couple of games.

Picture from today's practice shows a lot of divots etc. I wonder if they still overseed it? With a week off, that could really help by the USCe game.

Neyland field condition

They just aerated and put sand down on Sunday, which is why the field looks barren in spots in that photo. It's spots where the sand hasn't worked its way down into the soil yet. Part of the reason the team practiced in Neyland today was to help with this process.

For those of you not familiar with turf management, a sand/topsoil mixture helps promote growth and solid roots in Bermuda grass, especially in transitional and colder seasons.

It will be green and lush again by the time they paint the checkerboards next Thursday.

Just hit it with a little sand from the top dresser ....should get her back in buisness !

It's amazing what sand will do for warmer grasses. You can almost watch it grow and fill in.

There are Bermuda grass fields as far north a DC and Philly. Even when it goes dormant you have the root structure. They simply overseed and re-overseed as needed to keep it green.

Wonder if this contributed to some of the Dogs coming up lame last Saturday? Not Marshall or Barber though.

A couple of bulldog fans were complaining about this in my office yesterday. You'd think if it were that dangerous, UT would have had an injury by now. After all, we play on it the most.

About to say it looked like it had been core aerated. Which is where they basically cut holes all in the turf to allow the oxygen and nutrients into the soil promoting deeper root growth.

I work in the parks and rec system down here in south Florida and all the highschool football fields rarely get new sod put in...about 2 months before the season starts were "poke holes " then top dress the crap out of them until they cut off our sand budget lol...look brand new by seasons start.

If our turf is so dangerous, then why would our head coach have our entire very thin team practice on it yesterday? Georgia fans aren't very bright.

I was not going to bring it up in this board but that point was brought up. We had about a couple other guys suffer some ankle sprains. Curious if any Vol players had any injuries that they may be dealing with this week.

nope, just crappy conditioning on yalls part

I know a couple of years ago they re-sodded the infield at Coral Springs Cypress Park baseball field. I was surprised because what they took out looked fine to me.

What city are you in?
